Things I Learned From My Dog

Come. Stay. Sit. Shake. Lie down. Roll over. Speak. Dogs really can do it all, and on top of it, they’re our constant friends and companions. But did you know that they also have some valuable life lessons to teach us? They may not know it, but their perpetual happiness and joy about life is contagious; we could learn a thing or two from them.

So, whether you’ve had one dog, two dogs, or have never had a furry friend, here are some canine lessons to always be on the lookout for. Louie, Banjo, and Dixie, this one’s for you!

1. Strive to be happy.

In addition to just being naturally happy, dogs are able to make the best out of any situation. I chased the cat? I love running! I ate your homework? It was yummy! Their optimism is admirable.

2. Never waste an opportunity to play.

Sometimes, it’s okay to get a little riled up. We’re all in need of some well-deserved down time. So go ahead, chase that tennis ball!

3. Naps are always a good idea.

Tired? Nap. In a bad mood? Nap. Just don’t want to do life today? Nap. Go ahead, I know you want to sleep now.

4. Speak your mind, and do it loudly.

Never be afraid that the neighbors might get annoyed. They’re just jealous that they don’t have as much to say as you!

5. Treat yourself to something tasty once in a while.

Whether it be a bone or a bowl of ice cream, take some time for yourself. Indulge and have no regrets.

6. Do what you want, and don’t be embarrassed.

There is no shame in chasing your tail around in circles all day. If it’s something you’re passionate about, go for it. So much happiness could come out of it!

7. Appreciate the little things.

Dogs always seem to hear the quietest noises, see the most distant squirrels, and enjoy the most mundane activities. They're a reminder that we may not being experiencing the world to its fullest!

8. Outside is the best place to be.

You can never go wrong with nature. It’s so relaxing and soothing. Plus, it’s also super fun to run around in. Speaking of that...

9. Running can actually be fun.

Who knew? Go on a run with your dog; it's much better than running on your own.

10. Be comfortable in your own skin (and fur).

Adorableness comes in all shapes, sizes and colors. All dogs are beautiful, and so are all human beings. It's only right to treat each other with kindness and respect.

11. Look for the best in others.

Our dogs look past all of our flaws and accept who we truly are. Everyone has good qualities, and it is our job to search for these and bring them out for the world to see.

12. Love unconditionally!

There is no such thing as too much happiness and love. Make sure to show it to the important people in your life, and if you’re extra lucky, you may just get a treat in return!

Now, go play with your dogs and see what lessons they’re waiting to teach you! Woof.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
