If you’re a college student, you know how important it is to be smart with your money. And even though I’ve only been a college student for three weeks, I’ve come up with some tips on how to save and earn money in college—because we all know we could use a few extra bucks.
- Buy used books and sell old ones
Why buy brand new books that cost hundreds of dollars, when you can save money? Personally I’v found that renting is great, but if its not free, you’re better off buying a used book and selling it once your done with it.
- Sell your notes
The key to this is taking good notes, and then offering to sell your notes at a small price to your classmates. This is a great way to help someone out, and get payed for something you were already doing for free.
- Limit how often you eat out & when you do, be smart about it
Even though it can be really fun to go out every weekend, it cost a ton. But I also understand why its more appealing—especially when cafeteria food is usually gross—so here are a few ideas: Split your meal with a friend, order appetizers, drink only water, order off the children’s menu (if the restaurant allows that), and plan a head of time—pick a few dates out of the month and put some money aside for the specific occasion.
- Get a coffee maker
Coffee shops can be more convenient, but can cost you a small fortune. So the best idea is to by a coffee maker for your room. Yes, you will have to buy more coffee and filters, but trust me, it’ll be worth it. The second tip is to learn to drink black coffee, that way you don’t have to buy creamer and sugar. Also, when you do go to a coffee shop, straight black coffee cost way less.
- Open a savings account
Start saving now! It so easy, and there are even banks that are geared toward college students and offer great advice and other resources.
- Tutor
Yet, another great way to earn some money. And the great thing about being a tutor is that you don’t have to be an expert— just a dedicated, hardworking student wanting to earn a bit of money.
- Use on campus resources
All campuses have many resources, whether it be counseling, financial advice, gym, activity clubs etc. all for free! Well, not exactly since you’re paying for tuition…but you’re already paying for it, so take advantage of whats been given to you.
- Get a job on campus or in the community
Whether you work in the schools cafeteria, or the grocery store in the nearest town, getting a job is the most effect way to earn money. But remember just because there are jobs, doesn’t mean there will always be jobs. So be proactive and get your applications in!
- Save change
Don’t just toss you change, but save it! Get a piggy bank and store it for a rainy day.
- Attend free events and activities on campus
Campuses always have something fun going on. Find an activity board, look for free and cheap events, grab a friend, and enjoy!
So friends, start applying these tips to your day to day life, and I’m sure you’ll find success.
Happy saving/earning!
