5 Reasons You Should Learn To Play Guitar

For a good part of my life, I was not a very musical person. Don't get me wrong, I still sang in the shower, and there were many songs I liked, but I was never invested any further than that. About four and a half years ago, I found an artist who really spoke to me, and made an impulse decision to buy a guitar on my 15th birthday (thanks, Dad!).

That was probably the second greatest decision I've ever made. The first was dating my guitar-playing girlfriend. After all this time, I firmly believe anyone and everyone should pick a guitar up at some point in their lives, here's why.

1. Anyone can play

I swear to you this is true. You don't have to be artistic, or musical. You definitely don't have to be gifted, or start at a young age. All it takes is practice and patience. People old and young can pick it up at anytime and start learning, which sounds pretty damn convenient to me.

2. Happiness

It has been scientifically proven that listening to music causes the brain to release dopamine, a chemical that makes you feel happy and euphoric. Playing the guitar allows you to give yourself a little mood boost anytime you want. Not to mention that anyone you're playing for/in front of is bound to feel the same effect, so you are brightening other's lives!

3. Creativity

From super creative visionaries, to the most boring non-creative person, we all need an outlet to express ourselves and the inner workings of our minds. Playing any instrument can help drive your creativity to new heights you didn't even know were possible. Being able to think in new ways helps to keep your mind sharp, which benefits you greatly the older you get.

4. Relaxation

During a normal day, things happen fast and they don't always happen the way you want them to. Your mind is racing, making sure you aren't forgetting to do this or that, and life can quickly become very stressful. Having an outlet like the guitar, where you can just sit back and strum away, forces you to take your mind off of your hectic life and focus on the mellow feeling that comes from those six strings.

5. General bada**ery

Finally, the most important thing of all: playing the guitar is one of the most bada** things someone can do. Nailing a solo is right up there with slowly walking away from an explosion without looking back. People gravitate toward someone who can play an instrument. You are instantly viewed as more intelligent and creative if you just carry a guitar case around.

In all seriousness, learning to play the guitar is a fun process, and I recommend it for anyone looking to try something new.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
