My name is Leafy and I am a leaf of a rather tall tree, upon whose branch I live, and which extends over a narrow driveway.
It's summer, my second favorite season. I was just born this past spring and haven't known fall or winter.
However, my leafy cousins who survive through the fall and winter talk of the way of the trees to cast us off and go to sleep for many months.
But in any case, I don't see any point in stressing over what is to come!
For now, life is pretty good.
These past couple of days it has been hot and sunny, and as I get most of my food through photosynthesis, since Mr. Tree dozen's pass on all that much food to me from his roots, I've been quite full and happy.
But with summer has come an ever present menace.
These are the caterpillars.
They make their slow way up the branches and out onto me and my leafy siblings and take bites right out of us.
I'm happy to be food for them and all, but ouch, it actually hurts a bit!
I mean, come on you caterpillar fellows, have some compassion please!
But anyway, I'm rambling.
The summer is pretty nice and I'm happy to be able to help to bring some shade to my little driveway just below.
And it's really fun being a leaf.
I get to feel the breeze and bask in the sun when it is out.
Big gusts of wind are like a rollercoaster too! Oh boy is it fun!
And when it's about to rain, all my siblings and cousins and I turn over to let everyone know that the water is coming.
And to be honest, I could do with a little rain!
I'm kind of thirsty from all the heat of these past few days.
All this is just to say, I'm happy to be your summer leaf, and thanks for hearing me out.
I'm always talking, and so are all my relatives.
Listen closely when the wind blows, you'll be able to hear us chatting and enjoying the rollercoaster.
Your friend,
Leafy
