There I sat watching what had to be like the ninth episode of Impractical Jokers that I had watched in a row when I decided that I wanted to watch something different. I was scrolling through the channel guide when I came across the title "Ladylike.” Initially I just went past it but for some reason I turned around and went back to it.
As I began to watch the show, I realized how awesome it was and I instantly became intrigued!
The show follows Anna, Blair, Matteo, Megan, Nicole, Shannon and Jade through the streets of New York as they challenge the outdated social standards and stereotypes that surround men and women. There are so many gender norms in today's society that the crew goes around to prove that the other gender can do the same thing and film their reactions.
On the first episode alone the female members of the crew catcalled men to see how they would react, tried date stacking and kissed random strangers. I had never heard of date stacking but it turns out that it is actually a much more common thing than I thought it would be and tends to be more common among people who meet online. There were mixed reactions to those that were being catcalled and not too many people were so keen on kissing completely random strangers.
Over the course of 8 weeks, the cast has covered topics such as men "bro-ing out" at the gym, awkwardness surrounding menstruation, over-selfie-ing in public, bringing mothers on blind dates, walking and texting, and the idea that women can't drive, and much more!
The show not only challenges gender norms but also challenges things that are not associated with gender, but society in general also. I would recommend this show to anyone because it will appeal to people who like to laugh, are interested in gender roles, and who doesn't love hidden camera prank shows?
