For most people in college now, middle school was a rough time. You were transitioning from Limited Too to Abercrombie and Hollister, you still had braces, had no idea how to apply make up, and probably thought you were the coolest thing to ever happen to this world. This stage in our lives is something we can laugh at and occasionally want to throw our phones against the wall when these memories appear on TimeHop.
The times of middle school have changed now. Middle schoolers do not face the slump we previously did. Now they contour (better than I can), get 200 likes on Instagram (I am excited if I get 70), and somehow do not have hideous hair. The middle school slump seems to be over.
When did this happen? Middle schoolers use to be ugly and now they buy prom dresses for their 8th grade dance. Looking back at my 8th grade dance, I was hideous. A high ponytail was not a good call. When the middle schoolers are in college, they are going to look back at their pictures and they will not think wow what was I thinking.
The lack of the middle school slump is sad, though. Most of the girls in middle school look like they are children trying to play dress up. Everyone knows you are young and in the sixth grade, so be young in the sixth grade and be ugly. Middle school is a fantastic time in life to experiment with blue eyeshadow. People thought you were cool then, now it just looks like I'm trying to be unique and different in a do-you-own-a-mirror type of way.
Personally, I am glad middle school was a slump for me. What other time in my life would it be acceptable to have rainbow rubber bands on my teeth? I miss the times when my worry was what color combination I would put on my braces this month. Do middle schoolers not have braces anymore? Have they stepped it up to invisible braces? If only we were so lucky.
When you're in middle school, all you want is to be older. You are in an awkward middle phase of your life. Once you finally are older, though, you wish you would be younger. It is upsetting to see this next generation rushing their age and the fact the most of them dress better than me is also disturbing.
The middle school children should be embracing their youth and taking this time to create memories that will one day be so painfully embarrassing. Yes, my middle school days are excruciatingly embarrassing, but I was a kid. Everyone should get to be a kid for a while, you have plenty of time later on in life to worry about straightening your hair or having good makeup or looking cute. Put on a leggings, a denim skirt, and be happy, be a kid (or whatever the equivalent look is today).
