As a general rule of thumb, I am the type of person to say yes to opportunities and encourage others to do so as well. Especially in college, branching out and trying new things can be so beneficial for meeting new people and becoming more well-rounded and involved. Expanding your comfort zone is crucial to growing up and finding yourself, but saying yes to everything can sometimes be hard to stop.
Once you start saying yes to leadership roles, new clubs, or helping someone out, it's so hard to say no. You don't want to let anyone down and you want to be involved in as many projects as you can. When you start pushing the boundaries of your comfort zone, you won't want to stop.
Some people need to learn to be more adventurous, generous, or open to new things. Saying "yes" isn't as easy for them to say. Then there are also those who say "yes" too willingly and don't ever give themselves a break, those who take on too much responsibility and go adventure-happy. It's hard for them to say no, but sometimes, it's important to know when it's a good time to do that. Here are some examples of when it's probably better to say no:
When you've worked plenty of shifts and someone asks you to cover for them. Of course, every once and a while and when you can, it's part of being a good co-worker to pick up shifts for others. But if you have already worked a lot and are stressed out from homework and other things that may be going on in your life, there's no reason to feel guilty about saying "no" if you genuinely can't see yourself being able to take the shift.
It's okay not to join that club you don't want to join, even if your good friend is the president and is pressuring you too. If this club doesn't interest you, you should say no and make more time for things that do interest you. Even though your friend may be the president and needs people to join her group, it's better to be honest about not wanting to rather than dedicate your time and probably end up quitting.
If you don't want to go out this Friday night, don't. No one knows you as well as you do, and if a night to yourself is what you need, then take it. Don't let people influence you or be scared that you're going to miss something crazy.
Really, all of the times when you should say no are just a matter of listening to yourself and understand what you need. If you don't think you can handle more shifts at work, don't take them. If you can stand the idea of being part of another club, don't join it! And if there's anything you just don't feel comfortable doing or you need a day off, take it! College is great, and there a plenty of chances to say yes and take opportunities. This doesn't mean you have to take every single one!
