Yes, transferring is a great process, but it's not all sunshine and rainbows. Here are things no one tells you about transferring.
1. How much you'll really miss your family.
I am the first one to admit that I was counting down the days until move-in day. I was so excited about all the freedom and not being constantly bothered by my siblings (sorry, guys).
But once everything is put away and you're saying goodbye to the people you lived with your whole life, it can be difficult.
In the first few days, I was constantly in a funk. No one told me how bad it could be forming a whole new routine.
Obviously, I have gotten used to college and love where I go to school. But all I'm saying is that it's OK to cry the first few days of being away. It's a whole new place with all new people, so don't beat yourself up over it.
2. Making new friends can be hard.
If you're coming in as a junior, like me, making friends can be hard sometimes. A lot of people seemed to have found their cliques or are close to their past roommates. This was something I tried to get over fast. The minute I started getting more involved, I started to make more friends.
It can seem really hard at first, but it won't be hard forever. You'll find your people.
3. Don't constantly stay in your room.
Our rooms at home can be our safe place, but as a new student and transfer student, it could make the process worse. All these changes can be nerve-wracking, but staying in your room doesn't help. Don't sit in your room for the first week of school. Go out on campus!
Try and find all your classes and where the library is. Get involved in the first week because all campuses usually have a welcome week! You can meet so many people at welcome week. You could even bump into someone while you're looking for your classes.
Don't stay in your dorm.
Transferring can seem like a really scary process. Meeting new people and being in a new environment can be scary, but it just takes time to adjust. College is the best few years of your life. This is your time to be selfish and study what you really love.
