For many students, studying abroad is a monumental turning point in college. Hopping on a plane and living in Europe for a semester is a dream come true for tons of students with a case of wanderlust, or a strong desire to travel. While studying in a foreign country, not only do you experience a different way of life, but you learn a lot about yourself, too. Wherever you go, it’s important to be prepared for the unexpected before you embark on your expedition. Filled with hostel stays, nonexistent Wi-Fi, and the best pasta and gelato you’ll ever experience, studying in Italy will change you for the better.
Make a budget.
Because drinks at 8 euro a piece will start to creep up on your bank account. Cheap box wine from the convenience store will become your best friend, trust me. Work hard to save as much cash as possible before leaving. That being said, don’t be afraid to splurge here and there. You never know when you’ll be able to come back.
You will screw up a few times. It’s ok.
Getting lost, missing your shuttle to the airport, and paying over 100 euro for a cab might happen. You’re a tourist. It’s bound to happen at some point. Grin and bear it.
Explore.
Even if it’s by yourself, take a stroll around your city after class. Grab a cappuccino at a local cafe and people watch. Take it all in while you can; it will be over in the blink of an eye.
Don’t worry about what’s going on at home.
I can’t tell you how much I craved iced coffee while overseas. Can you say basic? Instead of focusing on all the things you miss back in the States, try out new things. Get close with your roommates. Limit Skype sessions to once a week. Don’t try to seek out an American diner, chances are it will suck. Keep in mind that your friends, Bagel Zone, and taco salads from the Union will all still be there when you return.
Adapt to the culture.
Because if you dance with an Italian guy at a club, he will probably think you’re engaged. Understanding and respecting cultural differences is important. Don’t worry if your waiter scoffs at your terrible attempt to order in Italian, just go with it.
As necessary as it is to plan before traveling abroad, make sure to live in the moment as much as possible. Spending a semester in a different country is a huge adjustment and chances are you’ll experience some growing pains along the way. Take the time to immerse yourself in the country, whether it’s Italy or not, and appreciate every minute.
