Whoever said that 2017 was the “Year of the Rooster” clearly made a big mistake. So far, 2017 has been the “Year of the Aussies and Kiwis” - especially in the entertainment business… And if you don’t believe me, simply watch Katherine Langford in Netflix’s Original Series 13 Reasons Why and KJ Apa in CW’s Riverdale.
Katherine Langford, 21, is from Perth, Australia. Despite having studied theater and music, Langford found it difficult to land herself a role in the entertainment business. While she did have small roles in independent films here and there, they were never big enough to get her name out there. That was until she was cast as Hannah Baker of 13 Reasons Why, a series based on Jay Asher’s book which holds the same title. It was from here on that Langford saw her acting career soar. She even got recognized by the great Lady Gaga, whom Langford personally adores and is inspired by. Now, while Katherine and her American accent will be back in Season 2 of 13 Reasons Why, I personally cannot wait to see what other roles she stars in! … Perhaps even in ones that showcase her own Australian accent!
KJ Apa, 20, is from Auckland, New Zealand. Prior to landing the “big time” shows and movies in America, Apa had a main role in a New Zealand soap-opera, Shortland Street. In 2015, Apa landed himself a role in A Dog’s Purpose, which was released in 2017. In 2016, he was also cast as one of the main characters in CW’s Riverdale, a T.V show that is based on the well-known Archie Comics. Much like A Dog’s Purpose, it was released in 2017 and as a result of its release, Apa found himself in center spotlight. His relationship with his co-star, Cole Sprouse, is every girls dream… And let us not forget that KJ is only 20 years-old AND incredibly good looking! Apa and all his greatness will be back for Season 2 of Riverdale on October 11, but until’ then, you rewatch him star in Season 1, which is (thankfully) available on Netflix.
I’m not quite sure what lives in the water that these aspiring and incredible young actors and actresses from down under are drinking, but I am totally here for it all. So, move over Mr. Rooster… The Aussies and Kiwi’s are taking over 2017. It is their year to shine.
