Khalid's album, "American Teen" is the album that all college kids need right now. Though this album came out a while ago, recently it has become a stress reliever for me. The lyrics to each of these songs speak to a different aspect of young adult life. Not only can we relate to Khalid through his music, but we can relate to him because of the place he's in his life right now.
Khalid is a 19-year-old, average teenager who had dreams of leaving El Paso Texas after he graduated in 2016. He comes from a military family, so he has grown up in places like Kentucky all the way to Germany.
Khalid writes and sings about what we are too afraid to say. His songs will help you through a breakup, inspire you, and make you feel less alone.
1. 8Teen
This is a popular favorite from Khalid's album. The lyrics, "let's do all the stupid shit that young kids do" they tell us that it's normal to mess up. It's normal to get in trouble with your parents, but we do it anyway because that's what growing up is about. This carefree tune reminds me that no matter how massively I screwed up, there's probably 5 other kids my age making the same mistake.
2. Young, Dumb, and Broke
I mean just the title of the song itself speaks to most college students' financial struggles. "I can not give you everything, you know I wish I could...we're just young dumb and broke, but we still got love to give". This track reminds us that though we don't have jobs, money, or that much experience, we have our youth to enjoy and that's just as good.
3. Another Sad Love Song
"You cut me deep and you left me wide open. I fought the demons that lie in between us. They'd think we're perfect if they'd ever seen us, but I guess this sounds like another sad love song. I can't get over how it all went wrong". These lyrics speak to how opening up to a new person can be scary and leave you vulnerable. When he says "I can't get over how it all went wrong"...I am sure many of us have broken up or had problems with someone and never known why it fell apart. This song is about moving on in a healthy way even though you may have been hurt.
4. Let's Go
This upbeat, popular, go-to party song always calms me down. "You got too much time to waste, focusing on what people say..." This is my "leave your worries at the door" song and it makes me forget about all of my responsibilities, what people may think of me, my insecurities, and it makes me just want to dance and relax.
I know that this article is a little random due to the fact that this album came out months ago, but I think that it is timeless. If you haven't discovered "American Teen" yet, you should.
