"Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders. Let me walk upon the waters, wherever you would call me." - Oceans, Hillsong United
Such a beautiful song, but as Christians we can get caught up in the hype this song has created and forget what it is really about. We lose sight of what we are actually singing about. And this is true for life, as well. Sometimes, we tend to lose hold on what it's really all about.
This chart-topping Christian hit is so much more than just a well-composed song that every church sings during their worship sets. It's more than just the quotes you see on people's social media. This song embodies one of the most powerful ideas in the world, and especially in Christianity: faith.
I do not mean our "faith" that is synonymous with the word religion. I am talking about this idea of radical faith that we must put in our Creator. I am talking about the faith that it takes to walk on the water like Peter (Matthew 14: 22-33). That is the faith that "Oceans" is talking about.
While going through life, we need to remember the story of Peter and Jesus on the water in Matthew 14:22-33. Jesus came walking over the waves to his disciples and Peter wanted to meet Him. In verse 29, Peter gets out of the boat and walks towards Jesus. He is walking on the water towards the Messiah and then he decided to look down at the water. At that very moment is when he started to fail. The moment he took his eyes off of God is the same moment that he lost faith, and he consequently began to sink. Moral of this story: our faith in God is what keeps us afloat.
This story in the book of Matthew epitomizes what our faith in God should look like. Jesus asked Peter why he doubted Him (verse 31). If we take anything away from this story, it should be that we cannot allow our circumstances to dictate the strength of our faith. We cannot allow what is happening on the outside to control the faith we hold within ourselves.
Hebrews 11:1 says, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." When we are in the lowest moments of life, our darkest hour, our faith in God's sovereignty is what we cling to. It is our lifeline.
Your faith is most important during those moments when the world seems flipped upside down and nothing seems to be going right. When your strength is fleeting, remember to hold fast to God. The devil will try to get you to turn your back on the Lord, but that is simply when you need to have faith the most.
Faith also gives us the power to do what we never thought we could. It gives us the ability to step upon the waves of life and to walk across the water. Trusting God allows us to move mountains and fight against the darkness. It's what God can use to heal the sick and make the blind see. Our faith in the Lord gives us the ability to walk into the unknown of life, where He can truly guide us into a deeper relationship with him.
Faith. Verses were written about it and songs were sung about it. And in the midst of all the craziness of life, we can forget how much faith really matters. Whether you are in a high or low point of your life, it's what gets us through. Our faith leads us to do miracles and works in the name of Jesus. So, remember that all you have to do is put your faith in the Creator of the universe. He is the star breather, the One who crafted you in His image, and the one who holds your future in His hands.
Keep the faith, my friends.
