Dear Kanye,
The entertainment and Twitter erupted last night as you made the most controversial statement you've ever made in your long history of questionable statements.
You said slavery sounded like a choice.
Now, there were some that thought maybe you just couldn't articulate your words correctly and were implying that there were more slaves than slave owners and they could have overthrown them if they'd all united together. However, they were enslaved in the mind and this halted them from gaining their freedom sooner. Now, I don't know if I fully agree with this statement or not but I do know that hearing a black man, the person who should feel the most victimized by the systematic racism and the institution of slavery imply that our ancestors chose the horrific life they lived for 400 years, hit a nerve. I'm 100% sure I'll never be able to support you again.
Twitter, obviously just as surprised, launched a hashtag #IfSlaveryWasAChoice. I hope you read these tweets but just in case you don't I can give you a quick summary of what they contained. Sometimes all you can do is laugh at other's stupidity and the best way to do this is to show them just how stupid they may sound.
Now, what all these jokes have in common is that if slavery was truly a choice why did those enslaved have to wait until 1863 for the Emancipation Proclamation? Why did families get ripped apart on a daily basis? What was the point of the powerful women such as Harriet Tubman who led over 300 slaves to freedom over the course of 19 trips? If slavery was really a choice, how are we still affected today by the decisions that took place over 400 years ago? Do you think those who lost their lives fighting for your freedom to sit on television and say those comments would be okay with that? Do you really think they had a choice?
I'll give you this. Sometimes words aren't always articulated in the correct manner. Sometimes things just don't come out right and I personally don't blame you now for the disrespectful and crazy things you spew out. When other's have the power and platform such as yours to impact millions, if you're going to use it inappropriately, I blame those around you. I blame the people who are your yes men. I blame the people who know you personally and make excuses for everything you say that is just stupid. Your fans don't see you every day but they do.
As a father of black children, to have you thinking something so vile that slavery was a choice; what are you going to explain to North, Saint, and Chicago? This type of thinking is dangerous and it can only hurt the community that you come from and set up your children for failure.
I hope you take some time and evaluate because you're on a slippery slope that I don't know if you can come back from.
