It's Just Not That Serious

Why get mad at the little things when you can just trust Jesus?

It's Just Not That Serious
Haley Mackey

I live with three 19-year old girls. Yes, it gets crazy. Yes, our periods sync up. Yes, we borrow everything from each other. Yes, it’s so fun.

Although SaraCabe and Elle are twins, they could not be more different people.

SaraCabe is our free-spirit, Jesus-freak, croc-wearing, mermaid.

Elle is our Tory Burch purse, pink, sour-patch-kid loving girl.

Sydney is our Birkenstock-wearing, wing-eating, quirky sister.

I am the witty, tennis-shoe wearing, chemistry-loving roommate.

Us four girls are so blessed to have been raised by parents who love Jesus more than themselves, and have raised us to love Jesus more than ourselves. Each of our parents are just as different from each other as we are.

The twins’ dad is an engineer, and their mom is a retired elementary school teacher and full-time grandma.

Sydney’s mom and dad work together in running their family dentist office.

My mom works for a healthcare company and my dad is a long-haul truck driver.

Sydney and I grew up in Greenville, while the twins grew up in Charleston.

I’m 5’6”, plus sized, with curly brown hair.

Sydney is 5’9” with long blonde hair.

The twins are 5’4” with ocean blue eyes.

We are each so different. Sometimes we argue. We argue about politics. We argue about worship music. We argue about dating. We argue about how we should dress. We argue about what we eat. We live together, of course we argue. While we have these differences, we are all united in Jesus.

The other day in BCM, we were talking about how differences can tear us apart. Sydney and I have differing political opinions. One small comment can send us into a snowball argument in just a few seconds. Sometimes we get so mad at each other, but the other day I had a pivotal moment.

At the end of the day, no matter who we vote for or what we wear or who we marry or what we look like, I will see Sydney in heaven one day. When we get to heaven, we will see each other and all the things that seem to matter now will no longer matter.

Our bodies will be perfect. There will be no president to vote for. There will be no dates to go on. There will be no outfits to pick out. There will be no music to choose from. There will be no workouts to do. There will be none of these earthly things.

So, why are we so concerned with tiny differences in our lives? SaraCabe, Elle, Sydney, and I have one major goal in life. Our goal is to spread the gospel and further the kingdom of God. Each day we work to love other people, further our relationship with God, and worship Jesus.

So, what do we always say?

“It’s just not that serious.”

“Do big things.”

“Trust the process.”

“Just chill.”

“Love people.”

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
