Joining a Fraternity Changed My College Experience

When I first stepped on campus last August I knew no one. I was another out-of-state student looking for a place to fit in. I needed to still find myself and my people in order to get the most out of college. One of the best decisions I have made in college was to rush a fraternity. It allowed me to find people with similar interests to me and values. I figured out that joining a fraternity is a lot more than just partying. To be a part of something bigger than myself and to be a part of that history is something I will cherish for the rest of my life. Being apart of a fraternity made me get out of my comfort and make connections to people that I never thought I would have met. People often give Greek life a bad reputation due to hazing incidents and other bad things spread through the media. Let me be the first to tell you that not all fraternities are like that. There is a place for any type of person on campus to experience a true brotherhood.

There are so many fraternities at ASU that you are bound to find at least one house that you can fit in at. For me, that fraternity was Beta Theta Pi. They accepted me with open arms and gave me memories that I will never forget. I went from knowing not too many people in college to finding brothers that I will be friends with for life. Being a Beta made me learn more about myself and what type of man I want to become in the future. For example, being apart of a fraternity means that you have more responsibilities and a busier schedule than an average college student. That may sound terrible but once you realize that what you're doing is making an impact on your community and your university in a positive way makes it well worth it. Completing my community service made me realize that giving back to your community and helping others is such a rewarding feeling. Also, there are plenty of trips and fun activities that come with being apart of Beta Theta Pi. If you like guys who respect their peers, show mutual aid towards others and their communities and put academics above all else then you should rush Beta Theta Pi next year at ASU.

Our fraternity is a close-knit group of guys who are heading in the right direction and always have each other's backs. Life can be hard but joining a fraternity made me realize that these are supposed to be the best times of my life and I should be spending them with good genuine guys. I can officially say I am getting all of those things from Beta Theta Pi.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
