The name of Jonas was holy in pretty much any 2007 household that had kids. “Who’s your favorite Jonas Brother?” was a question often asked in my fifth-grade friend group. (Personally, mine was Joe, but that’s beside the point.) With hits like “Year 3000” and “Burnin’ Up,” they took the hearts of bubblegum-pop-loving adolescents such as myself all throughout childhood.
So, naturally, many of us were devastated when the Jonas Brothers broke up in 2013. Most of us who were mega-fans as kids weren’t really keeping up with the JoBros anymore, but nevertheless, it was like a piece of our childhood was splitting up.
We went on to see Kevin Jonas get a reality show, Nick Jonas launch a successful solo career... and Joe? Well, he wrote about how he and his brothers were forced to do a lot of fake things by their bosses when they were famous teens, putting an even bigger damper on the whole breakup situation. We haven’t heard much from my favorite Jonas brother since then.
Or so we thought.
Surely you’ve heard this jam, and if you haven’t, you totally should.
Wait, is that Joe Jonas on lead vocals? You bet your 2007 CD collection it is. Their carefree-sounding first single features quirky lyrics such as, “I’ll be Diddy, you be Naomi” and, “I keep on hoping we’ll eat cake by the ocean,” giving the track a ridiculously fun and funky sound.
The band is called DNCE, which, according to Joe, is supposed to stand for an imperfect version of the word “dance” (although the name is pronounced like an acronym, D-N-C-E). In a recent interview, Jonas himself said it’s “not a perfect word, but you don’t have to be a perfect dancer to dance in life.” DNCE is made up of Jonas and his friends Jack Lawless, Cole Whittle and JinJoo Lee, and together they’ve released an EP called "SWAAY" — yet another imperfect word. The group even performed on this year’s "New Year’s Rockin’ Eve."
With hits like “Cake by the Ocean” and “Toothbrush,” DNCE shows us that there is a certain electric mix of pop and rock that only a Jonas brother could create. I downloaded "SWAAY" with the feeling that while an older band might break up, the special character of each member never really goes away. I hope that Joe’s new group finds a ton of success, and, more importantly, we hope the middle JoBro never, ever gets his own reality TV show.
