There has been a lot of talk and excitement about Netflix's new Marvel spin-off TV series; first "Daredevil" and now "Jessica Jones." All capturing the attention of comic-book fans worldwide. They collectively lost it when the first commercial trailer was released. Jessica Jones is actually one of the more unknown superheroes in the Marvel universe with an equally unknown past.
In the Netflix series, filmmaker Melissa Rosenberg, delves into the psychological and neo-noir--which is just a fancy term for a genre of crime film with darker tones. Warning, however, this content is quite graphic and if you prefer not to see disturbing violence or hear profanities, then this show might not be suited for you.
Jessica Jones was created by Marvel to be a more down-to-earth, realistic, and relatable character despite her powers. Jones is a foul-mouthed private investigator, who suffers from a myriad of psychological troubles from past traumas. Her coping mechanisms consist of whiskey, cheap bourbon, and varieties of vodka. Adhering to her no-nonsense attitude, Jessica Jones wins the hearts of viewers. She has very quickly become one of my favorite lead female characters in any television series. Jones is played by Krysten Ritter who usually plays the best friend of a protagonist, but she definitely brings her A-game to this TV series. Her performance even rivals that of the actors for "The Avengers."
With a great protagonist there must be an equally amazing antagonist, and this show definitely delivers with the introduction of Zebediah Kilgrave, played by the incomparable David Tennant. Kilgrave is not your standard "mustache-twirling" baddie. He has a past as complicated as Jones', and the best and worst thing about this character is that you can't help but want him to succeed at times.
The story does not neglect the villain's emotional and person arc but instead shows you what made him the way he was and why he is such a "villain." Tennant's protrayal of Kilgrave according to Forbes rivals that of Loki and Kingpin. Securing him as one of the most top tiers of Marvel's live-action villains.
This show was made for binge watching, as all of the episodes have been streamed on Netflix. As a chronic "skipper" I would advise you to sit through each episode because there might be something easily missable if you skip through episodes. Each episode brings something more to the game and helps weave the intricate story that is Jessica Jones. This show is worth watching all the way through and for all of those who are waiting for Game of Thrones or Sherlock to come back, this is absolutely worth watching while you wait.
