We love Katniss, particularly Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss, because she is so real. She says the wrong things — a lot; her hair isn't always perfect; and the camera occasionally captures some slightly unflattering angles. Jennifer Lawrence's performance shatters the expectation that in order for a woman to be the hero, she needs to be flawless and low-key fixing her hair and makeup in between fight scenes so that she is always glamorous.
J.Law has provided us with countless opportunities to connect with Katniss on a personal level — because we can just feel it, ya know? But nothing tops her ugly cry at the conclusion of "Mockingjay Part 2," the conclusion of the series' movie franchise.
The ugly cry got so real. During a hefty cry, you do not control your facial muscles, and as a result, they morph into an arrangement as ugly as the pain you are feeling. Hollywood typically ignores that and portrays its starlets as these beautiful goddesses, immune to the ugly cry.
Not J.Law/Katniss — she screamed, she sobbed, she hyperventilated... and then, she drooled.
As "ews" and "grosses" murmured through the theater audience, I was giving an imaginary fist bump to Queen J.Law for her raw performance. How many of us get a little juicy during an intense cry? Yeah, everyone. How many of us would share our cry-drool with millions of viewers worldwide? Yeah, probably just her.
Shout out J.Law for this flawless performance. As I sat in the audience, I truly felt that watching myself cry over ____ (don't worry, I won't spoil it for ya). Maybe it was because I was also ugly-crying with grief from the audience, or maybe it's because this talented woman captured the soul of humanity and heartbreak for millions to feel and enjoy.
And, yeah, okay... the drool was a little gross, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
Bravo, Jennifer Lawrence. You're quite possibly the only human who can deepen my admiration for you by drooling on the big screen, and I applaud you.
