It's Okay Not To Be In A Sorority

Sorority life is not the only way to be successful in college.

It's Okay Not To Be In A Sorority
Miranda Conley

For the past month or so, my Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram feeds have been almost exclusively pictures from girls on their sorority bid days at their respective college campuses. They pose with their new letters and take selfies with their new sisters in matching tank tops. Their captions frequently include their letters and some reference to a new home. And honestly, it warms my heart and makes my day to see how happy and excited they are to be a part of a sorority.

However, nothing breaks my heart more than hearing from and consoling the girls who didn’t get into a sorority – especially the girls who really, really wanted to be in one.

Often times, in between the tears, they’ll say, “I don’t know how I’m going to make friends,” or, “I don’t know how I’m going to be successful in college.” And sure, sorority life is one way to make it in college – after all many sororities are helpful socially, academically, philanthropically, networking for future careers, or any combination thereof… But it isn’t the only way. Luckily, many colleges have specific offices to aid their students in the same aspects that sororities do.

A campus involvement office will surely be stocked full of flyers for clubs and organizations on campus that are seeking new members. A sure-fire way to make friends is to join one or more clubs. There are clubs for anything and everything imaginable: a certain T.V. show, in support of a charity, going to the beach, a genre of music, etc. And if not? The opportunity is there to start your own club. Additionally, campus involvement offices will usually be able to direct you towards a certain organization if you are seeking volunteering or leadership opportunities.

Academically, many schools will offer tutoring services. If you are struggling with a class, a trip to the academic center will help find you a tutor as well as set up a time for you to get the assistance you need in a class. There are also office hours with your professor, of which going to will not only strengthen your understanding of course material, but will also help form a more personal relationship with your professor (which could be helpful in the future when you start looking for internships and employment). Additionally, many schools will have services to help figure out your major (if you’re undecided) and guide you in taking the right courses to fulfill your graduation requirements.

And of course, many campus’ career service offices will host job or internship fairs for their students. It is a great way to get your resume out there and learn about positions available at places, often times, close to your campus and relevant to your major. Career service offices will help you explore your career options, and put you on the path to gain relevant experience in your field.

All of these campus offices and more exist to make their students successful in college and beyond. They are there for you to make use of them, so don’t be shy about dropping in or making an appointment! And, if you’re not quite ready to walk into one of your campus’ offices, reaching out to your peers is a good way to make friends: be it for going out, studying, going job hunting, hanging out, or going volunteering. It isn’t “weird” to strike up a conversation or exchange numbers with someone you’ve never spoken to before – that’s how you meet people that could potentially turn into friends.

So, if sorority recruitment didn’t work out the way you wanted to, or maybe even if you didn’t rush at all, everything can still be more than okay. There are still ways to be successful and enjoy your college years.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
