Ever since the announcement of "Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Awakens," fans everywhere have come up with speculations and theories to what could possibly be the plot of the movie and what roles the old and new characters will play in it. It all started with the first trailer, with people analyzing what these two new faces (Finn and Rey) are going to bring to the table and how they are affiliated with each other. Then moved to the new look of the storm troopers while keeping the old logo of the empire and why there were non-clone people in the front lines of this “evil” organization. Going into the movie, everyone posted on their social media that they didn’t want to have the plot spoiled because they wanted to be able to experience the big reveal.
After the first 30 minutes of exposition so that we could understand what’s going on, the plot starts making pretty big reveals and bringing back the classic Star Wars phrases and objects that we know and love. Every character seems to be tied together save for one. Rey. Her mystery is what propels us to episode VIII. My theory is that the famous Luke Skywalker is the father of our female protagonist and that Kylo Ren is actually her cousin. There are several hints that the film gives that, when tied together with the original Star Wars lore, seems to hold up.
Rey’s Home Planet
In the movie, Rey lives on the sandy planet of Jakku, which shows much resemblance to Luke’s Tatooine. Both also happen to be planets where they were probably left for their own good, not knowing that they had abilities in the force, therefore protected from the evils of the galaxy. Luke probably did this to Rey because his father did the same to him.
Skills with Machinery
Just like Luke, and Anakin before him, Rey proves to be more than exceptional at piloting space crafts and working with complicated machinery such as the Millennium Falcon (which is two generations older than her). Throughout the movie she performs many repairs and even finishes the sentences of Han Solo, who even ends up offering her a job (which also happened to Luke).
The Force Dream
When Rey is in Maz Katana’s basement, she finds a light saber, when touching this light saber she is met with a powerful vision of her childhood back on Jakku and watching someone, that she probably held dearly, disappear. After returning from the flash, she then encounters Maz Katana, who finds her one the floor. As Rey panics, Katana states that it was originally Anakin’s (who had many force dreams himself) and then passed down to Luke (who has a vision in the Dagobah cave). Katana then explains that Rey has called by the weapon. Rey then makes an attempt to run away from her problems just like Luke does when he is told that he has to be the one to take down Darth Vader.
Kylo Ren’s Mind Read
When Kylo is reading the mind of Rey, he states that he sees dreams of an island. This could very well be the same island that Luke was standing on at the end of the film. Watching Rey land onto the planet was also interesting as she was amazed by the vast amounts of water. Water also seems to be a key symbol in the movie as Rey’s opening scene has her drinking the last of her water and when Finn lands of Jakku, the first thing he mentions when walking into town is how much he needs water.
Her Sudden Force Ability
While Kylo is reading Rey’s mind, he starts to exhibit some degree of difficulty. He then realizes that Rey can use the force too. At the same time, Rey becomes aware of this. She then, as soon as Kylo leaves the room, starts to “test out” her powers with some pretty advanced techniques, starting with a jedi mind trick.
Lor San Tekka
While Lor’s life ends fairly quickly in the beginning of the movie, he seems to resemble Ben Kenobi as person that is meant to watch over Rey. Just as Ben did for Luke. This is also why Kylo Ren went looking for him, because Lor originally had the map to where Luke was hiding.
Leia’s Hug
Towards the climax of the movie, Leia hugs Han and Rey before they get on the Millennium Falcon. And after the climax Leia hugs Rey again just has strong as she would have hugged Han or Luke, therefore Leia feels that Rey has a strong meaning to her.
R2-D2
During the force vision that Rey has, it is obvious that R2 goes into sleep mode there. There is also a hand that gives R2 the map. That hand is a metal hand and closely resembles Luke’s hand. R2 doesn’t decide to boot up again until Rey comes into his presence which means that R2 also possibly knows what’s up.
But hey, that’s just a theory.
