iOS 9: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

Another update, another round of excitement or regret.

iOS 9: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

Unless you've been living under a rock or don't have an iPhone, you know that Apple released the newest iOS update, iOS 9. The much anticipated operating system has some new features that tech fanatics were really excited about, as well as some lifesaving new hacks. However, some of the new features are really making some users regret updating their phones.

The Good

Low Power Mode: How many times has your phone died seemingly without warning because you were too busy on Twitter? It won't happen again! Your phone will ask you if you want to turn on low power mode when you're at 20 percent and 10 percent. In low power mode, the screen goes to sleep a little faster than normal, automatic downloads and background app refresh are eliminated or reduced, and mail fetch is turned off. This will probably be the best feature from all of iOS 9, in my opinion.

New Photo Folders: Selfie lovers rejoice! iOS 9 comes with the ability to sort photos into different folders. All of your selfies will be in one place so when you want to post a #selfiesunday on Instagram, you don't have to go through your entire camera roll. The same goes for screenshots, so all of the screenshots of texts from your ex are all in the same place to easily send in your group chats with your friends. There is also the option to hide photos, so if you have any questionable photos that you don't want the average person flipping through your phone and seeing, you can send them to a hidden folder

Addition of Flag Emojis: Forty-fournew flags have been released onto the emoji keyboard. The highly anticipated taco, unicorn, and upside down smiley face emojis will be released with iOS 9.1, hopefully coming in November.

The Bad

More Unnecessary Apps: Find My iPhone and Find My Friends are now installed automatically into iPhones. Why? I deleted these apps in the first place! I don't need or use either of these apps. I truthfully don't plan on stalking my friends.

The "Handoff" Feature: When you double click your home button, you are still given the opportunity to view all of your apps, but this time, it is less of a carousel and more like a deck of cards. It's cool and looks sleek but it's a little hard to not accidentally close out of your music because the apps are so close together.

The Ugly

The Font: What is this? Comic Sans? I don't know what else to say about the new font besides that it looks like a first grade teacher picked it out.

Calibration Issues: Many users have been complaining about their phone freezing and crashing while scrolling through the various tabs. Every new update comes with their share of glitches, but this is causing people to run for the hills, or their local Apple store.

The verdict?

iOS 9 may have some cool features and will take some getting used to, but Apple needs to get its act together by the release of iOS 9.1. I don't want anything ruining my new, cool emojis.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
