Interview With Muslim Student
Kary

Today I decided to interview one of my really good friends, Liliane Seffah. Liliane is an 18-year-old college student with a major in General Science. I have gathered a series of questions and Liliane will try to answer to the best of her ability.

1. What is the difference between the words Islam and Muslim?

Liliane: Islam is the religion that Muslim practice and Muslim is the people that practice Islam.

2. What are the major beliefs of Muslims?

Liliane: We just believe that there is no God, but Allah and Mohammad and his just prophet.

3. What are the different kinds of prayer that Muslims practice?

Liliane: We pray five times a day: Fajr, Dhur, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha. These prayers have a specific time that the mosque will usually give out randomly. What I mean by randomly is that they change every day.

4. Do Muslims believe in the Bible and Torah?

Liliane: Yes, we do, but not all of it. We believe in the Bible and Torah, but we think that the Quran is the last true book.

5.What is hijab and what is the purpose of it?

Liliane: A hijab is the covering of the body and where you wear a scarf around your head to cover your hair. Basically, a hijab is a woman covering herself so a man should know her for her mind, not her body. And, it is also a symbol of purity.

6. Are men and women equal in Islam?

Liliane: Yes, they are, Islam was the first religion to give women the most freedom.

7. Do all Muslims speak the same language?

Liliane: No, because Islam is spread all around the world, so it basically means that everyone has their own language based on where there from. However, the Quran was written in Arabic, but there are many translations.

8. If Mohammad wasn't the last Prophet would you be Christian?

Liliane: Yes most likely because Christianity was the religion before Islam.

9. What do you guys think about radical Muslims?

Liliane: In all honesty, we don't even claim these radicals as Muslim because they don't represent Islam and they don't follow the Quran the right way. They try to turn every statement in the Quran into an aggressive way.

10. Do you enjoy being Muslim?

Liliane: Yes, I actually really enjoy being Muslim and I love my religion because it promotes peace, nothing else. I also like it because there is so many things in the Quran that really do prove our religion is the one. I believe that even if you're not Muslim, if you do good you will still go to heaven.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
