Interview With Kevin Droniak: YouTuber, Grandson, And Now Columbia College Chicago Student

Kevin Droniak started filming videos with his grandma almost four years ago. Since then, he's gained millions of views, been featured on Jimmy Kimmel (twice!), and graduated high school. I got a chance to quickly sit down with the student from Columbia College Chicago's newest class and ask him questions about his grandma, his channel, and his future.

Why did you choose Columbia College Chicago?

I chose to go here because it's in an amazing city and I wanted to go somewhere far away for school (I’m from Connecticut), and it offers amazing majors that most schools don’t.

How has your college experience been going so far?

It’s been going great, thank God! I was worried I wouldn’t like being so far from home, but it’s actually refreshing meeting new people and seeing new scenery.

What kind of classes are you taking?

Right now I’m taking TV Arts: Production, two basic ones, Writing and Rhetoric and Animal Behavior, Journalism and Society, and First Year Seminar.

How do you think your education here has and will help your online presence?

I think it will help it a lot! I’m learning new video tools and also even learning more about social media because I plan on taking a social media class.

Do you plan to continue with your videos throughout college?

Yes I do! I’ve started to vlog and talk to the camera just myself more but also have grandma videos stocked up.

How will the transition to college affect the content of your YouTube channel?

It will affect it by having more videos of just myself up on my channel so I hope my subscribers like them!

What are some types of videos that we can look forward to in the future?

You’ll see videos of me ranting, telling stories, answering people’s questions, and maybe some Skype videos with my grandma.

Are you working on any new projects?

I’m working with PBS at the moment for a web series called “The Chatter Box.”

What can you tell us about “The Chatter Box?”

We filmed it all in August and they’re slowly going to release them while I’m in school. We filmed 20 episodes at my grandma’s house with a crew from PBS.

We just sit and talk about pop culture and try new things that my grandma has never tried before. We played around with different apps like Dubsmash and posting pictures on Instagram. It’s basically me teaching my grandma tech-y things.

You recently had a meetup with your fans at the Bean! What was that like?

It was really fun! People started commenting nonstop requesting for me to have one once I moved here, so I did! I told them where to go and when and at least 50 people showed up! A girl flew in to see me, and another girl drove 13 hours! It's always so amazing meeting the people that have changed my life in the flesh.

Tell me something about you that no one knows!

I have two older brothers that I never ever talk about. They’re named Kyle and Curtis. But I’ve never mentioned them.

If you've somehow missed out on the hilarity that is Kevin Droniak's youtube channel, make sure to check it out!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
