Once all the kids go off to college families like to do this thing they are call "downsizing". This means moving into a smaller home than your current one. I mean it does make sense, if there are only one or two people living there why have three bedrooms? But moving out of your childhood home is really strange. The thoughts you have, and the feelings you feel when you are packing/purging can be very overwhelming. So I want you to know that you are not alone and the easier thing to do is ignore it until the last minute. So here are some things I did when I should have been packing up my room and moving out.
1. Reading through old journals feeling embarrassed for your past-self
2. Finding photos from middle/high school with people you haven't talked to since then
3. Re-reading all your books instead of boxing them
4. Throwing out (OK maybe burning) old school papers/projects
5. Defeating the dust bunnies through the house
6. Getting emotional over every little thing you find
7. Exploring the depths of your closet
8. Selling old toys/dolls
9. Filling up trash bag after trash bag
10. Losing sleep because your house is constantly full of painters/plumbers/realtors/etc.
11. Finding yourself taking mental pictures of every little thing so you don't forget any detail
12. Remembering all the good times and bad times
Moving out of your childhood home can be hard. It may be easier to just do these things I've mentioned above instead of facing the facts. But moving out just means you can start the next step in your life, whatever that may be.
