The Age Of Instant Gratification

How do we stay human during the age of the machine?

The Age Of Instant Gratification

Hey, you. Yeah, you! I want the next maybe 5-10 minutes of your life.

Before it’s too late, I want to at least show an attempt at this subject/topic. I may offend people with what I say and that is not my intention. I want people to understand that the things we worry about are all similar to anyone else.

And in life, like yours and mine, we all were accustom to hard work and enduring the satisfaction after. Like earning something. And then something happened in life.

Technology appeared and people loved it. Everything about it. How crazy is it that I call someone in Korea and see that person through my phone. We can search anything on Google or Bing or whatever other search engine people use. We can fly and save days of traveling maybe even years through technology. It was awesome at first. Now, we can't live without it and some of us feel even more alone even though it's easier to connect.

For example, let's picture your day. Okay? Stay with me. Let's say I was a ghost and I followed you throughout your day. How many people do you think we would see staring aimlessly at their phones essentially killing the precious time we have here. With this technology, we are bad a** right? We can build things at godly rates with all this machinery doing it for us.

Hungry? Psh, there’s a Mcdonald’s on every block nowadays! Didn’t they just come out with a whole campaign on how their meat isn’t pink stuff? 60 years after it was a concern? Slaughterhouses that don’t even have real animals in them nowadays. That stuff is sold everywhere! And guess what, people find it delicious!

In stories about the human race there was a progression; That we have evolved and after man created fire, we have created nothing short of an advanced civilization. The direction of humanity has lost its way. I am scared where life is going to take us in the next 20 years; As should you.

We need to understand that we are special; humans are special. We need to be told that every day. We need to feel proud and feel empowered not to let this progression overtake our humanity. We can change the world; you, me, anyone. And it all starts by loving who you are as a person. If you love yourself, you'll live and act out of love. Your fellow man needs it. We all need it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
