5 Inspiring LGBTQ+ celebrities That remind us that love is love no matter what

Here are five of the many celebrities who helped set the foundation and continue to do so for all those in the LGBTQ community. These five individuals along with many others used their platform to help advocate for a more accepting and loving world.

1. Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie is quite open about her bisexuality and has been for a while. While she has been married to Jonny Lee Miller, Billy Bob Thornton and is currently married to Brad Pitt she has admitted to having intimate relationships with women. She is quite open about her attraction to women which is not commonly seen in Hollywood.

She extends this open-mindedness to how she raises her kids. Her daughter Shilo prefers to have short hair, wear suits and go by the name of John. As all parents should, Angelina and Brad have embraced John's identity. Angelina Jolie is an advocate for all types of sexuality inside and outside of her home and is someone to be admired.

2. Cynthia Nixon

Cynthia Nixon known for her role as Miranda in Sex and The City is openly bisexual and is married to Christie Marinoni. She is not only open about her bisexuality she has also recently put herself in the spotlight as she runs for governor of New York, arguably one of the most powerful offices in the state.

There has not been a governor in New York who has identified as gay or bisexual making Cynthia Nixons campaign especially unique. While she does not identify as gay, causing some controversy, she is not allowing outsiders to define her sexuality emphasizing the fact that her marriage to Christie was a choice not because she is gay.

Cynthia Nixon could help add a new perspective to our state government and help advocate for the acceptance of all sexualities.

3. Tim Cook

Tim Cook, one of the wealthiest most powerful men in the US came out as gay in 2014. Tim Cook was the only chief executive out of the 500 largest companies in the U.S to be open about his sexuality. The reason behind this being that the majority of chief executives grew up in a time when being gay was not accepted and in some cases could even result in prison or conversion therapy.

Tim Cook coming out as gay was a huge step in the right direction for the LGBTQ community in 2014. He was then able to use his power and position to push his home state of Alabama to allow for better rights for the LGBTQ community. He made the step that many executives were afraid to make and along with many others created a more accepting environment for the LGBTQ community in the corporate world.

4. Katy Perry

Katy Perry's hit song "I Kissed A Girl" in 2008 started a conversation about her sexuality and allowed many to embrace the idea of homosexuality. Katy Perry grew up in an extremely religious household where homosexuality was seen as a sin. Sadly, this is a common experience for many teens growing up as homosexual or bisexual.

As she accepted the National Equality award in 2017 she opened up about praying the gay away at Jesus camp and how she later found people who understood her struggle with her sexuality and allowed her to feel accepted rather than ostracized.

Her song I kissed a girl allowed many young teenagers who were struggling with their sexuality to no longer be ashamed and to embrace themselves. Through her music, Katy Perry has given many young adults the platform to talk about their sexuality and celebrate their sexuality.

While she received mixed reactions, there is no doubt that Ellen Degeneres helped shape American television into what it is today. Her show is extremely successful and has millions of viewers. She continues to inspire many people in the LGBTQ community to open up about their sexuality and take pride in their sexuality. She is truly an icon.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
