"In Transit" is a new all a capella musical that focuses on the lives of 11 New Yorkers as they maneuver their way through the city. Last week my friend won two tickets through the lottery for the musical.
As soon as the show ended my friend turned to me and we said the same thing: The show is meant for New Yorkers, not tourists.
The show uses the subway to represent how New Yorkers are always trying to get somewhere in life. The idea is that everyone on the train has a goal and that we are all intertwined somehow.
The audience can easily find themselves in the characters. There is an actress who has been trying for 15 years to get a part on Broadway but works as a temp to make money, even though it's not what she wants to do. A girl who dropped out of grad school, moved across the country for her boyfriend who then dumps her so she takes up running to cope with the breakup. A guy who is struggling to tell his mother that he's gay and is getting married. A Wall Street guy who was fired for accidentally replying all in a work email chain with an inappropriate response and is now broke needing a job.
The show's residency is at the Circle in the Square Theatre. The music was all acapella which really showcased the actors' amazing talents. However, I couldn't tell you or sing you a melody from a song in the show. There is the stage with a runway sticking out. There is a conveyer belt on the runway which serves as the subway train and the representation of people trying to reach their goals. The stage looks like a subway station and doesn't change throughout the hour-and-a-half, no intermission show. The theater is small and intimate, which gives the audiences a stronger and closer connection to the characters.
There is no doubt in my mind that every audience member there had been in the same shoes as one of the characters. For example, I related to Ali, who took up running to help cope with the breakup and Nate who is looking for a job and is broke. However, while the theme of the show and characters are relatable to everyone the majority of the jokes were those only New Yorkers would understand.
For example, the show references when trains were under construcion the 4 became the 6, the 7 became the 1, the A became the J, etc. Only New Yorkers understand that when there is mantainence on trains all the routes become extremely complicated.
In another scene, two characters were excited to get on an empty train. When they got on the train they plugged their noses and understood why the train was empty. There were no other actors or objects in the scene indicating what the smell might be. However, if you're a New Yorker you know there was a homeless person on the train causing the smell.
If you're a tourist looking a for a show with extreme talent, go see "In Transit." But if you're a New Yorker looking for a show to speak to your soul dodge your way through the slow walkers in your all dark outfit to your nearest Subway, swipe your metro card multiple times and wait for train delays to see this show.
