Sentimentality: excessive tenderness, sadness, or nostalgia.
I guess you could say that I am a huge sentimentalist, if that's what you want to call it. I think it comes with being very compassionate, empathetic and carrying a heavy heart which is usually worn on my sleeve. I feel things so immensely, and so strongly that sometimes it's hard to breathe . . . if that makes any sense at all. I thrive on memories, but not to the point where I let them hold me back. I used to be like that, but then I realized that it's important to live in the now and to not let jejune, nostalgic emotions get in the way. But I do think that there is a time and place for being sentimental. I think that people should embrace it in the moments that it is important. A trait of sentimentality is being able to be vulnerable with your feelings. It reflects how important something is to you. I think it's an extremely beautiful trait that a human has. Below are some of my favorite quotes on sentimentality, and I think they're worth giving a read and a thought:
"I'm a romantic; a sentimental person thinks things will last, a romantic person hopes against hope that they won't". -F. Scott Fitzgerald
"I always say that I
don't want to be sentimental, that the photographs shouldn't be
sentimental, and yet, I am conscious of my sentimentality". -Robert Frank
"I try to open up my
heart as much as I can and keep a real keen eye out that I don't get
sentimental. I think we're all afraid to reveal our hearts. It's not at
all in fashion". -Paul Simon
"I love a lot of very sentimental music, but I shouldn't necessarily be the person who makes it". -Grimes
"I know I'm not going to be in your head all the time. But once you know me, I'll be forever in your heart". -Crystal Woods
"The most introspective of hearts tends to be the most sentimental. We
cling to the smallest moments from our past because we fear that emotion
will never come our way again". -Shannon L. Adler
“All kinds of people read poetry: revolutionaries, scholars,
sentimentalists etc. But above all else, lovers read poetry. Why?
Because we fell in love. And then we fell in love with love.” -Kamand Kojouri
"My poor heart is sentimental, not made of wood". -Nina Simone
“Love appears in moments, how long can I hold a moment, as my moment
fades, I yearn to catch sight or sound of you, to feel the surging of my
heart erupt into joyous sounds of laughter.” -Chris Watson
There's nothing wrong with having sentimental moments in life. Sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming, but I think that during the times that they do happen, people should embrace them and realize how beautiful they are.
