Why Music Majors Hate Dead Week

(I'm)Dead Week

Thanksgiving is always such a pleasant time filled with family, friends, and good food. But when the time comes to return to school, if you're a music major, you've probably been slammed by literally everything at once.

You've got at least 3 tests, 2 quizzes, and probably an evaluation of some kind before the week is out.

You've spent hours on end studying, and you've only tackled one subject. Before you know it, it's the wee hours of the morning. Times up. Lets hope that Baroque aria, or small form, study session sticks while you nap for 2 hours before your 8 A.M.

Your juries are in a week. SURPRISE!

Its that time again. You look at the calendar and realize, crap, I have maybe two out of my six pieces memorized. Welp. Time to hit a practice room for six hours. Let's hope to God these pitches and rhythms stick along with the information you've crammed in that head of yours. You know you should have been practicing for months but, oh yeah, you've had tests and performances every week and a half for the past three months.

Every ensemble you're in has a concert this week.

Final concerts are this week, featuring all of the patron's favorite carols and your conductor's favorite Bach Oratorio, Handel Chorus, Tchaicovsky Suite, or god-awful rendition of Sleigh Ride. You've got the carols because you've played or sung them since you were 5 but the Bach, not so much.

Church's are all over you for gigs like flies on garbage.

Who can resist the easy money of a church gig? But wait, how many have you accepted now? Two? Ten? Who's to say?

Luckily, it'll all be over in a few days, only to be replaced by the stress of actual finals. But keep going! It'll ALL, actually, be over in just a few weeks. You'll be free as a bird, sittin' pretty back at home, no music to memorize, no test to study for. Aural skills will be a distant memory, music history a mere wisp lost in your hot chocolate. You'll be snuggled up on the couch, watching whatever holiday movie ABC family is playing, surrounded by your loving family. SO KEEP GOING NO MATTER WHAT. THE END IS NEAR AND YOU CAN DO THIS!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
