I’m probably going to get hate for this.
OK, so "Suicide Squad"! Everyone has been going crazy over this movie, they were so excited and it looked so cool! I was one of the people who was super excited to see this movie, for one thing I do like the "Suicide Squad" comics (well the ones I’ve read, I haven’t read all of them) and also, let’s just all admit all of the marketing towards this movie was amazing. Every trailer looked really cool and all the set photos looked really cool
But then I started to hear some things that happened during production. The writer/director David Ayer apparently had six weeks to write the entire script and then when straight to production without any rewrites (which in case you didn’t know that’s not enough time) and he recently went on a Comic Con panel and started chanting, “Fuck Marvel!" That’s just a whole new kind of immature.
Also, the fact the there's a petition out right now to shut down Rotten Tomatoes because of the negative reviews is the stupidest thing I have ever heard in my life. Guys, critics gave the movie negative reviews because critics analyze it as a film and not as a geek-fest for their favorite super-villains. Grow up!
So my personal opinion on "Suicide Squad"? Walking right out of this movie, I really…hated it.
I’m so sorry guys. I walked into this movie telling myself this was going to be good, I walked in wanting to love it so bad, but I couldn’t. To me, it was actually hysterically bad, like I actually want to see this again just to see where the movie went wrong.
This is where I would explain the plot, but honestly, I couldn’t understand what the hell was going on most of the time, everything is happening all at once and it just expects you to understand everything. I’ll try to explain it the best I can. The government wants to assemble a team of supervillains to do a dangerous mission for them and if they screw up, then they get killed. That’s what I got out of it but then we got this other plot involving Enchantress (who I will get to) which is just really confusing and a lot of things aren’t explained. I feel like if you haven’t read a "Suicide Squad" comic or you don’t really understand these characters, then you’ll be completely confused by this movie because you’re just expected to get it.
The first hour of this movie is introducing to us the actual Suicide Squad. More like just Harley Quinn and Deadshot. Seriously, the first hour is pretty insulting to any of the members that aren’t Harley Quinn and Deadshot, no one besides those two are developed and when they tried to give their backstory, they’re just breezed over. Like Killer Croc for example, they just explain that he's a crocodile human that eats people... OK, how did he become a crocodile? Never explained. Does he really even do anything? Well, I mean...no, not really. You’re just supposed to accept it. You get a little backstory with Boomerang, but it wasn’t enough. Slipknot was wasted, and Katana literally had no purpose to be in this movie. Come on! Katana is awesome! And you give her nothing to do to make room or Deadshot and Harley Quinn? That whole thing was just wasted.
Aside from the character moments, this movie is so full of itself. It tries so hard to be edgy and cool when in reality it just came across silly and unfocused. Like, the editing. What the heck? This is the most annoying, choppy editing I’ve seen in a while. They want you to think that it's "cool" and "different" with the editing. I kid you not, the scene where The Joker goes like, "I'm not going to kill you, I'm just going to hurt you," was literally cut about eight times and went from clear to blurry and wavy.
They will literally build up a scene and then cut away from that scene into another scene. There are so many instances where I noticed that they obviously re-filmed certain scenes and some scenes were obviously cut out. That was so annoying because it left me with unanswered questions and apparently, I’m just supposed to go along with it and if I want answers, then they'll probably be on the deleted scenes on the Blu-Ray. I didn't come to this movie to say, "Wow that was so cool! I want to buy the Blu-Ray now." Because I'm not going to.
If anyone was looking forward to seeing Jared Leto as The Joker as much as I was, then you’ll be disappointed. He’s not in the movie as much as the advertisements want you to believe that he is. I’d say he was in it for about 20 minutes tops. What he did with The Joker was cool, but he looked weird, I won’t spoil it, but it’s going to piss off a lot of Joker fans.
Now to Enchantress who is the main villain, yeah she sucks. Like wow does she suck. She’s one of the lamest villains DC has put on to film, her motivations were completely unclear unless you pay close attention, her CGI design looks like total crap, what she was trying to do was clichéd as all hell and she looked like she was hula dancing most of the time. I’m serious she was so lame as a villain. Come on! I wanted to see what she could do, but they turned her into a complete moron.
I’m just so disappointed with how this film turned out. DC is known for making crappy movies, but I thought this was going to be their return to form. Turns out I was wrong. I didn’t want to be wrong, but I was wrong. Is it one of the worst comic book movies I’ve ever seen? Of course not. There we’re a couple of cool scenes and I do like Deadshot and Harley Quinn was OK at best, Diablo was...eh... But it was just so inconsistent and lazy and completely full of itself. Some will probably leave disappointed, but others will love it. But just respect the opinions of one or the other.
Just please be mature about this and don't say that the people who disliked the movie didn't get it. Not everyone is going in having read the comics. I for one have read the comics, and I found the movie confusing and I was paying close attention.
