If High School Courses Were Ice Cream Flavors
The Halstead Blog

Recently, I have seen a lot of Odyssey Articles with the same format "If College Majors Were [cookies, characters from The Office, coffees, etc].

But, I haven't seen any articles about high school courses. Being an overworked, overwhelmed high school student, I think I have a good sense of the types of courses I take. Living only 2 hours away from the Jersey Shore, aka the gold mine for all things ice cream. I've also had my fair share of ice cream. I have complied a list of what ice cream is most like high school courses.

Vanilla- English

For some, vanilla ice cream is the greatest dessert in the world, but for others, it is just plain boring. In high school, there are people that love writing papers and reading Shakespeare, but for others, it is just plain boring. Of course if you add some toppings to your vanilla, or some figurative language into your essay, Vanilla ice cream and English class can get a little more exciting.

Coffee- Science

One of the most popular favors of ice cream ever, coffee is a great energy booster. You will need that energy boost when you are cram studying for the biggest test of the year or the lab practical you will have in an hour.

Gelato- World Language

I think this one is self explanatory. Gelato is like the "Hola" of ice cream. It is known as ice cream globally, even if you aren't from Italy. Like Hola is known as hello even if you aren't fluent in Spanish.

Birthday Cake- Art

Birthday cake, probably one of the most colorful ice creams known to man. Birthday cake is also super pretty, usually dyed with pink food coloring and sprinkles, if you add a little too much food coloring and sprinkles, everything goes south. Just like art class, you can make a beautiful masterpiece, but once you start mixing different paints and your palette starts looking gray or brown, you aren't going to get a masterpiece

Cookies and Cream- Music

One of the most beloved ice creams in the world is the classic cookies and cream. Cookies and cream makes people happy, music makes people happy. Simple.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough- Math

I guess you can count the cookie dough pieces are in your scoop. or determine the ratio between chocolate chip and cookie dough.

Frozen Yogurt- Phys. Ed.

Frozen yogurt is said to be healthier for you, but it really isn't. Phys. Ed. is supposed to be the healthy part of your day, but honestly, most of the period you just sit and talk to your friends, and before you know it, you are moving on to your next class.

Chocolate- History

Probably one of the oldest flavors of ice cream. Also one of the most boring flavors, but the people who like it, love it. And, you can learn about the geography of where cocoa beans are grown in your history class.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
