Whenever I tell anyone that I'm currently in school for my Bachelor's in English and literature, it's always followed by the question:
"What are you going to do with that?"
I plan on being a teacher, and no, not an elementary teacher. I want to teach high school students; I want to help young adults find their passions in life. It's in high school where I really enjoyed my English classes, where I found my love for all types of literature, and I aspire to give the same passion to young adults.
I want to be the person who introduces students to books that will impact their lives forever, some they'll dislike while others could potentially be their favorites. I want to be the one who hands students their first copy of great American literature like The Great Gatsby or a piece of British literature like a Shakespearian piece and see how their minds interpret it.
Teachers have the ability to inspire the next generation.
Looking back, many of my high school teachers left huge impacts on my life, and I believe it's my time to do the same. And even though I'm the teacher, I never want to stop learning, and I believe students have the ability to teach us too.
So go ahead, criticize my liberal arts degree or the job that may not pay the most, but I'm ready to make a difference while I shape the minds of our future.
I love my degree and I'm aware the degree and career choice sounds "silly" to many, but after many trial and errors, I found it's my calling.
