An A Cappella Group "Kidnapped" Me After I Auditioned For Them

How one audition led me to one of the coolest nights I ever experienced.

An A Cappella Group "Kidnapped" Me After I Auditioned For Them
Alex Atiyeh

It was September 4th, 2018. Auditions were being held at the Trabant Building on campus for all of the a cappella groups that sing at the University. I ran over the building at about 7:30. Auditions took place from 6-10, so I figured it would not be too busy at the time I arrived. Boy was I wrong. There were at least a hundred kids lined up sporadically throughout this tiny hallway all waiting to audition for the groups. My plan was to audition for about 5 groups to give myself comfort room in case I didn't make one. Yeah, that didn't happen either. I waited in line for one a cappella for about a little under an hour until I finally got to walk in. I met some nice people, listened to some music, and texted my friends about how nervous I was.

Then, my name was called.

I walked up to the guy, Josh, who I had met the first night I moved onto campus and introduced myself. I gave him my audition sheet and walked into the room. He introduces me to about 10 other people, and they scream at me saying "Hi Alex!" That calmed me down a bit to be honest. Then I had to a pick a card from off the floor. There were maybe 7 cards all facing upside down. My heart was racing, I didn't know what I was going to have to do. I picked up one and it read something along the lines of "If you were a stripper, what would your signature move be called?"

My mind went blank.

I read it out loud and they said I could give them a name if I wanted to. I came with the first word that came to my mind: Floss. Great name right? They asked if I could floss, so I proceeded to floss and they applauded. Also, when I say floss, I mean the dance move, not floss my actual teeth. After that, I was supposed to sing for them.

Anxiety, please step in.

First, I sang And So It Goes by Billy Joel, and then they asked me to sing something else, so I sang My Petersburg from Anastasia the Broadway Musical. It went well! I proceeded to do some scales and improvisational skills, and I said goodbye to them. I walked out and went back to my dorm because it was after 9 and I was SO exhausted. An hour later I receive a call from one of the guys I auditioned in front of.

Anxiety, please take the stage again.

I answered the phone. It was Josh. He said they really liked my audition, and that they want to offer me a spot in the group. I accepted the offer instantly because why wouldn't I? After I said yes, a roar of screams came through my phone's speaker. It was the rest of the group. Josh said other stuff and then ended with "Don't go to sleep!"

What.

So I went to the student center with my friends, and it was close to 11 o'clock at night. I got a donut from the Dunkin' Donuts, and when I turned around I saw the a cappella group coming inside the building. Before I knew it, they were in front of me singing their version of Ain't No Mountain High Enough. It was really freaking good. Then it got interesting!

They took me.

They grabbed me (and my donut thank goodness), and took me with them outside. We walked to their cars, drove to North Campus (which is a hike by the way), and got another new kid. In total there were three of us that were "kidnapped." The group formed a circle around us and started singing to us. They are really freaking good holy crap. After that, they gave us a group hug and proceeded with the kidnapping.

It was midnight now.

We went to Denny's Diner, but the whole time they kept making it seem like we were going to a whole new state or something. It was great honestly. I got a grilled cheese, introduced myself more to the group, and overall it was a great time. I truly love everyone in the group. They are all so incredibly nice, and just want to have a great time.

So that's my kidnapping story! They brought me home past like 1 AM. I was almost late to my 9 AM that morning but it's all good. Overall, super pumped to be a part of my very first a cappella group. I know the next four years will be amazing being in it.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
