When Richard Martinez arrives in Milford, Texas, for a new job as a chemistry teacher, he is quickly fired for being a homosexual. He goes to a restaurant meeting Karma, and after they have an eventful night in a bar thirty miles away, Richard is convinced to dress up as a drag queen, take back his job, and avenge the teachers and students who were mean to him.
Bianca Del Rio is an actual drag queen who won the sixth season of RuPaul's Drag Race. RuPaul makes an appearance as the weather announcer letting the public know "Hurricane Bianca" is about to make an entrance on land in Del Rio, Mexico. When Bianca (Richard) arrives at the school again, there is a drastic change in the drag's personality, calling out Deborah the vice principal for saying the "R" word, calling her students "bathmat", "white trash that won't burn", and "James and the Giant Peach", respectively. To be honest, Bianca (Richard) has every right to do this. This film also portrays the brutality of being a part of the LGBTQ+ community and living in the south.
The most emotional part of this film is when Karma is reunited with her estranged parents and her brother, Coach Chuck, an employee at Milford High School. Karma reveals to Richard she is a trans woman. Getting bullied throughout her child for being queer didn't help things. Before her 19th birthday, she ran away from home. She hasn't seen her family since. Later, she gets up the courage to talk to them after years of not speaking. When her parents and Chuck meet Karma, they hug her with open arms and accept her for who she is.
Bobby is my favorite character in Hurricane Bianca thus far. The quirky, obviously gay student reads his chemistry book, does his homework, and loves Bianca's shade she throws at her students and fellow coworkers. With him being gay in the south, he is bullied on a daily basis. This happens a lot more than people are aware of. Students are made fun of, hit, slapped, kicked, and more often than not depressed and suicidal because of it. But throughout the movie, Bobby keeps a bubbly and happy appearance.
Turns out Deborah has been having extra-marital affairs with Tommy (James and the Giant Peach) for quite some time now. She is exposed on the presentation of Teacher of the Year awards and tries to deem it right by saying he would be legal in June. Even if someone would be legal in six months, it still makes it inappropriate and it still makes Deborah a sex offender.
Richard is then told by Principal Wayne to "stay out of the ladies' room", permanently having his job back.
If you need a quick movie to watch on Netflix, or just looking for an easy to understand laugh-fest, I highly recommend this.
