How Turning 21 Opened My Mind

It really is all down hill from here..

How Turning 21 Opened My Mind

Okay, so this may seem like a rant to some people, but that isn’t what this is at all. Maybe it is a little, but mostly, it’s just honesty. I turned 21 two weeks ago, and honestly, nothing has been the same since. I’m not one of those people who talks about how much their lives change after every birthday, but honestly, my life really has felt different lately. Oftentimes, I don’t feel connected to people younger than me anymore. The wild party culture at school just doesn’t feel fun anymore. I went to a college party this past weekend and I just kept thinking about how dumb it all was and how I would rather be home with my dog than staring at a bunch of young kids falling all over themselves to hook up with someone. My life is quieter these days. There is just so much more to life than who’s hooking up with who and who got the most wasted last weekend and all of that other crap. I’ve also been struggling with mortality because I’m realizing that as I get older, so does the rest of my family. My mom is the only person who truly knows me in this whole world and lately, I have been thinking about what it would be like without her and honestly, I see no point to it. It’s scary too because being an English major, I don’t get a lot of encouragement from people around me. People often look at my major as the easy way out, and I worry I won’t know what to do with my life after I graduate. I love being 21, don’t get me wrong, but I haven’t even gone to the bars yet because I’m too busy being an old lady. I guess I’m just changing, but I have never been one to love change.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
