When it comes to beauty, products in the kitchen aren’t off limits. After suffering from dry scalp and dandruff during the winter I was ready to revive my scalp overnight. I tried deep conditioning and protein treatments but it didn’t seem to help my scalp. I was worried that I would have to wait for my dry scalp phase to run its course until I remembered what my grandmother used to say about Olive Oil. When I was little my grandmother always told me that Extra Virgin Olive Oil could not only be for cooking but health and beauty as well. Although my grandmother isn’t the first to discover the magic of olive oil I was thankful for the realization. I ran to the cabinet in my kitchen and grabbed the bottle of Olive Oil and began my dandruff relief treatment.
The process of using Olive Oil on my scalp was extremely easy. I divided my wet hair into four equal sections and drizzled the oil on the line of my scalp or in particular problem areas. I then put a shower cap on my head and sat under my hooded dry for 15 minutes (to really let the oil settle). This process can also be called “prepooing” because it helps aid against shampoos tendency to strip hair of its natural oils. After I sat under the dryer for 15 minutes I washed my hair as normal with shampoo and conditioner.
Immediately out of the shower I braided my hair into six sections for a braid-outs, sat under the dryer for 30 more minutes, and then let it air dry throughout the night. When I woke up I was amazed with my results. Not only was my scalp moisturized and clear of dandruff but my hair was softer than usual.
After prepooing, with Olive Oil for a little over a week I found it more beneficial to use it in its natural form rather than in conditioners and moisturizers. With using Olive Oil alone, my scalp was able to suck up all of that good magic that is beneficial for hair. Olive Oil is rich in vitamins, minerals, natural acids and antioxidants that help rejuvenate and guard skin.
Before when using products that only used olive oil as an ingredient I didn't see the same results. My hair wasn't as bouncy and my scalp still felt itchy and flaky. I also felt that the other products weighed down my hair and left it feeling nasty and greasy. With the Olive Oil alone my hair felt extremely light and clean. It was almost as if I layer of skin was lifted from my head (I know gross).
Olive Oil can also help protect you from frizzy hair and split ends as it serves as a heat protectant and daily moisturizer.
