Some people tend to have problems trying to talk to new people, especially if you're introverted or just shy. I don't have too many problems with that part but if you're anything like me then you probably have the worst time trying to talk to people of the opposite sex. Here are some tips for talking to new people, talking to people of the opposite sex, or just gearing up to talk to that person who's caught your eye. Hope you guys enjoy!
1. Just Go For It!
For me, it's difficult to talk to guys, even ones I'm not attracted to. In my mind men are intimidating, not because they are men, but because they have the ability to hurt you in ways that other people can't. Since I've been in Italy I've taken on a "Just Do It" mentality, I mean, what is the worst that can happen? I am no longer a child and in the adult world other people won't hurt you, make fun of you, or ridicule you to the extent that they would during those horrid primary school years. So, just go for it.
2. Smile.
All of my life, people have commented on the fact that I seem to always be smiling and I always thought it was weird because it is something that I can't control, my face is always smiling. I've found through the years that smiling is a great way to look easy-going and approachable, someone that people can and will want to talk to. Smiling may make the special someone less nervous to talk to you.
3. Be Active!
The worst part about trying to start a discussion with someone is the lack of participation on their part. Trying to start a conversation takes a lot of courage and to be smacked in the face with one word answers sucks. It may be hard but if you aren't interested you have to find a way to let them down, if you don't you may be hurting them more by seeming so disinterested and annoyed.
4. Show Your Personality.
One reason that people try to talk to other people is because they want to get to know you, to see what you're like and what you're about. If you like to, tell a joke, no matter how corny or flat to see how they respond, they may not life but they see you're making an effort and they get an insight into who you are as a person. If you're passionate about politics, mention it, it may lead to a great debate! There are so many different aspects of our personalities that you may find something that you and another will just click on, so don't be afraid to open up a little.
5. Have Fun With It
Having a conversation doesn't have to be a burden. Just let go and be free. See where it goes. If it falls flat, rest assured that you tried and it was an experience, now the next opportunities won't seem so bad. Conversations with new people are always so much fun because there is so much you can learn and share between you so just go with the flow.
