1. Plan Ahead
Don't procrastinate. Planning is important. You might need to ask for time off from your teachers or bosses, so asking three months in advance is always better than three days. Plus, besides being able to prepare and pack, you'll get more time to talk or text your friend. And do you know what the best feeling is? When they keep telling you how much they miss you and you have this surprise pressing against your heartstrings, trying to get out, wishing you could tell them they won't have to miss you very soon because you'll be with them!
2. Tell Everyone You Know Except Them
This step isn't necessarily necessary, but it's a fun one. Even though they won't be surprised, they'll be anticipating it just as much as you and the excitement level will be just as high. Plus, when your friend realizes they were the only one who didn't know, they'll feel extra loved and surprised.
3. Plan How You'll Surprise Them
That doesn't have to be planned ahead of time, but it should be discussed. Whether it be popping out of a cake or from behind a car, they'll be surprised. Also, be sure to say something witty. You'll beat yourself up if you don't.
4. Take a Breath
Trust me.
5. Surprise Them
Enact your plan and watch their face. The amount of shock may vary from how far you traveled. They will run at you. They will scream. They will hug you. Be ready.
6. Don't Let Go.
Hug them tight. This was all for them. And they're your best friend, they deserve it.
This article is dedicated to my favorite couple, Sam and Justen. Justen, I would've never been able to come to Ohio without all your help and support. Thank you. Sam, I love you so much, I'm so happy I was able to surprise you on your opening night. I am so proud of you. I adore you both!
