'Tis the season for summer classes. They are a pain in the butt, and nothing else but that. When the weather gets warm again, it can be hard to stay focused during the summer months. You've got this! I believe in you! Here are 8 things that will keep you motivated during the summer session.
1. Plan your studying effectively.

Use the syllabus to record due dates for assignments, upcoming exams, etc. in a planner, calendar, or digital calendar. It can be difficult to come home after a long day of work and do homework, but you've gotta do what you gotta do. This may mean you have to say no to social events every once in a while, unfortunately.
2. Do homework outside.
Tired of doing homework all day indoors? Go outside and do your homework. Sometimes all you need is to catch some rays and breathe in some fresh air. The change in scenery will keep your mind sharp, and will aid you in getting through your work load. Don't get too distracted though.
3. Get enough sleep.

The main one is lack of focus. Establish a normal sleep schedule, and don't use electronics or watch television an hour prior to falling asleep.
4. Arrange a group study session.
Call up your classmates and see if they are willing to study together. There is strength in numbers, and opportunities to get help if you're too shy to ask the TA or professor. There is a possibility to make friendships with your classmates through study groups. Plus, group study sessions are always more fun than studying solo.
5. Use treating yourself as an incentive for good grades.
After working long and hard while your friends are sleeping in until noon, the results will start to show. Treat yourself to your favorite meal, coffee drink, or a new piece of clothing for your endeavors. Things like this along the way will help you feel more positive about working hard. Don't go overboard though!
6. Remember that this will help you get further in your academic career.
Taking summer classes are like nails on a chalk board. But they will help you complete credits faster. The more credits you complete, the closer you are to graduation. Keeping your eye on the prize will get you through that midterm!
7. Eat well and exercise.
Just like getting a proper amount of sleep, diet and exercise are essential to maintaining health and wellness. Without proper nutrition, your mind will go into starvation mode. Effects of starvation mode include lethargy, changes in focus, and depression. Exercising regularly helps improve your mood, memory, and cognitive performance. What's not to love about a healthy brain and body?
8. Don't overwork yourself.
With all this free time during the summer, it can be easy to lock yourself in your room doing homework for hours on end. Take breaks in between. Make time to see family and friends. Not only is overworking yourself exhausting, but you will not retain as much information than if you took breaks. If you feel mentally spent and have the time, take a day off. You deserve it!
These were some of my tips and tricks that I use myself to get through summer classes. I commend you for taking time out of your summer in order to get yourself where you want to be. You should be proud! I wish you luck in your summer session!
