We've all experienced it: a lack of or even quite possibly, a disappearance of all motivation. As the year seems to drone on and on, sometimes rather monotonously, your schedule becomes routine and sleep becomes rare.
You potentially get bored with your typical day-to-day procedure of waking up, showing up and there never seems to be any time to workout or get out. Honestly, there doesn't seem to be enough time in the day to do anything.
The cold of winter does not do us any favors either, the dreary weather exhausting us, dragging us down and draining us of motivation to do anything other than sleep. But trapping yourself in your room will never solve your problems and spring is fast approaching, so it's about time to get a grip.
If you find that your motivation meter is at zero, or maybe you even struggled to motivate yourself to read this far into the article, here are some tips on staying motivated and active throughout the winter:
1. Set goals for yourself.
Whether it be to work out twice a week, eat carrots instead of cake or get a B on that impossible mid-term you have coming up, set some realistic goals for yourself. This way, you will have something to work towards and something desirable and attainable in the near future.
2. Embrace the endorphins and adrenaline you experience after a workout.
Being active actually makes you feel good. Instead of being sluggish and tired all the time, go for a short run. The endorphins and activity will pick you right back up and you'll feel energized and ready to go.
3. Get more sleep.
This doesn't mean during class or at random hours of the day. Go to bed at a reasonable time at night. Instead of staying up Netflixing all night or scrolling through social media, get the z's you so rightfully deserves. Your body will thank you in the morning.
4. Organize your thoughts and obligations.
Get a planner or a calendar and write down all the things you need to do, where you need to go and when you need to do them. Checklists will help motivate you to do the things on them instead of leaving everything until the last minute.
5. Find time to relax and be on your own.
Have some free time? Go get a coffee by yourself, relax in your room or take the long scenic route home alone from class. This time to yourself will help you gather your thoughts and unwind a little.
6. Also, find time to be with others.
Don't allow yourself to always be alone. Being with others, laughing with others and doing fun things with others will make you feel more alive and energized. This will also give you things and events to look forward to.
7. Make plans for the spring.
Spring means sun, which brings more energy and happiness in general. Make plans to travel, go to the beach and do adventurous things with friends. This will motivate you to do what ya gotta do and get through the winter.
8. Dress up and look put together.
Take a day to roll out in a cute outfit. Sweatshirts are comfy, but they make you feel sloppy and even sleepy sometimes. I'm a strong supporter of sweatshirts, but nothing makes me feel more confident or driven than when I feel put together.
So pull yourself together, make a plan for yourself and start getting excited about life. It's time to get motivated and be like Beyonce—aka you gotta werrrrrk.
