Sewanee students are gradually getting back into the swing of things - with new classes, new friends and new dorms. We are all excited to reunite when the clock strikes noon at McClurg Dining Hall (the social hub of Sewanee), but we tend to become overwhelmed with the lines and crowds around us. Instead of being impatient and always going for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, many of us should look at all of our options first. By seeing all of your options to begin with, you are trying new things and enjoying all that the dining hall has to offer.
For The Salad Fan
McClurg has a diverse salad bar full of fresh vegetables, cheeses, dressings, nuts and other toppings. To optimize your Sewanee salad bar experience, I would highly recommend getting a larger plate at one of the main lines, so you can fill up on leafy greens and fresh produce. My favorite salad has a mixed green and spinach base, topped with grape tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, and a light Italian dressing. Starting with a dark green lettuce gives you a more nutrient-rich salad. Adding fresh, raw vegetables like bell peppers, sugar snap peas and broccoli also optimizes the health benefits that a salad is meant to provide. In order to feel more satiated, there are many protein options for your salad in McClurg as well: boiled egg crumbs, a grilled chicken breast, chickpeas, veggie burger, turkey burger, or maybe even pinto or black beans. A sweeter side salad could possibly be as simple as a plate of beets with a little feta, topped off with a balsamic vinaigrette. Note that the cheeses, nuts, croutons, dried fruits and seeds should be added sparingly. Finally, stick to one of the many light dressing options, and try it on the side so you can fully appreciate the natural flavors of your salad.
For the Sandwich Lover
If you like sandwiches, you should definitely check out the sandwich line. There are many types of breads, cheeses, deli meats, and even tuna or chicken salads to choose from. If you don't want bread, you can easily exchange it for a spinach, whole wheat or sun dried tomato wrap instead. Don't just stick to the classic meat and cheese combination, but head over to the salad bar to add some lettuce, hummus, tomatoes, pickles or even sprouts (for an extra crunch). There is also a section for mayonnaise, mustard, etc. Remember to add some sweet potato fries, and you have yourself a satisfying lunch!
For The Sweet Tooth
The dessert section can be limited at times, but if you experiment with your options, you can have a simple, sweet treat. Many Sewanee students have tried making homemade ice cream sandwiches with two cookies (M&M are my personal favorite) with swirl frozen yogurt or the ice cream of the day. You can also put sprinkles or nuts on the edges of your creative ice cream sandwich. Just be sure to get a napkin because this dessert might make a little bit of a mess. For a more savory “dessert,” try making a Nutella or peanut butter sandwich (or both) with sliced bananas and honey on whole grain toast.
No matter what you decide, you can always grab a bowl and put all of your favorites in it to make a tasty lunch. Be sure to put some rice and beans with whatever meat is available and you will have a one-of-a-kind meal. Don’t forget to grab a piece of fresh fruit on your way out for a study snack later!
