This is a response to Never Hide Your Pride: Here's How You Can Celebrate.

Happy Pride! The month of June is not only a time of celebration of LGBTQ+ voices and experiences, but recognition of the history behind the continuous movement for equality and issues the LGBTQ+ community is facing today. Although being an ally of the LGBTQ+ community and showing support is important, it’s crucial that we make space for their authentic voices and diverse perspectives - this month and all year round. As an ally, I recognize that there is always room to learn and grow in allyship, whether that’s taking a class that discusses gender and sexuality or being intentional about pronouns and language. Here are some ways you can support the LGBTQ+ community as an ally during Pride and throughout the rest of the year!

Educate yourself

Learn about the adversity that the LGBTQ+ community has faced in the past and continues to face in the present. For example, educate yourself about the pieces of legislation that are in the process of being passed in your community and how this could impact the lives of those affected. Learn about your elected officials in your community, state, and country and advocate for those that support the rights of the LGBTQ+ community. Rather than asking your friend that is a part of the LGBTQ+ community to educate you, it’s important that you put in the work!

Show up at Pride events and beyond

Being an ally not only means supporting the LGBTQ+ community around you, but showing up for them. Attend a drag show, parade, or festival event during the month of June! Remember to research the history of the celebration before taking part. This month and every month, show up by standing in solidarity, advocating for those who are marginalized, and making space for the LGBTQ+ community.

Donate to an organization that benefits the community

LGBTQ+ programs and organizations not only provide tangible support to those who need it but also a sense of security and safety. Resources that provide HIV testing, housing, affirming healthcare, and support groups are life changing and your donation will make a difference! Furthermore, you can directly support LGBTQ+ artists by buying their products rather than buying from companies that engage in rainbow washing - which you can learn more about here.

As emphasized in an article by Mashable, allies should be responsible, respectful, and mindful of Pride, especially the fact that the celebration is not intended for them. By doing research, showing up in different ways, and donating to communities that benefit from support, we’re combating the harmful stereotypes and actions that have been established in our society. It’s important that we show our allyship every day, not just during the month of June!

Clarity To Confusion

Last year, I knew exactly what I would be doing with my life. Not just what major I wanted, although, I did know exactly what I was going to major in during college. I went further, though, and knew exactly what I wanted to do with it. I aimed to be a book editor and use my French and English majors to go into technical editing after going to grad school. Yet this semester, disenchantment hit. I had no clue what I wanted to do with my life anymore. I still loved the idea of being a book editor. I still loved reading. I just couldn't feel any passion towards the courses I had to take this semester. They were amazing, but they didn't excite me the way courses I would love should. They didn't inspire feelings of amazement at how awesome my major is. It was then I realized maybe my major wasn't for me.

The Procrastination Station At College
Achieve Center - Wendy Loewen

In high school, being a procrastinator wasn't that big of a deal in my own opinion. But coming from a school that didn't really have strict deadlines on things, meaning you basically got points for turning it in be it exactly on or before the deadline, or 4 weeks later when you realize your grade needs to be raised up. So, when I came to college, I knew it would be different. It hasn't really been hard transitioning into a good student when it comes to out of class work and projects, but it hasn't been that easy either. I will use myself for example. I am enrolled in Introduction to Public Speaking, and it's not that is a hard class, because it isn't, but I just get lost in other things and before I knew it, I had to present a persuasive speech the next day. I also realized this at about 11:15 the night before, and had about half of my outlines done, and my visual aid hadn't been started on. Though I got it done, I promised myself that I would not ever just wait until the last minute with specifically this class, but with any other class also. After that little dilemma, I decided to look for ways that I could get things done in a timely manner. So, here I have listed a few things that I now use in order to get things done before the deadline so that I do not have to rush and worry about it the night before:

Starbucks is a great coffee place. It’s incredibly expensive, but there is no denying that it has earned its merit in our society.
