Life is to not be understood, only lived.
What is mindfulness? Mindfulness is clearing your mind of the past and the future and simply living in the present. Mindfulness is observing your surrounding and coming to peace with each and every one of them. It is acknowledging anything that may be bothering you and then dismissing it. It is deep, relaxing breathing. It is living in the moment.
We all have cell phones and don't get me wrong - they are great. Having pictures from your loved ones in the blink of an eye, Skyping someone half way across the world, and sending emails to anyone anywhere virtually at anytime. Don't get me wrong - this is great. 20 years ago, these were not possibilities. At the same time, these little devices here to make our lives easier, are simply wrapping us up in a technology induced world - preventing us from living our lives in the present. When was the last time you sat outside and enjoyed a sunset without taking a picture of it? If you had to take a moment to actually try and recall the answer, you my friend, need to give it a break.
Next time you are bored, don't go reaching for that phone. Instead, try observing your surroundings. Listen to the noises that are present, the smells, sites, and feelings you have about what is going on. When you observe what is happening in the now, boring things suddenly seem less boring.
Next time you are stressed, don't go texting your best friend about it. Instead, try practicing deep breathing techniques... or meditate. Try yoga. All it takes is about twenty or so minutes of one of those things and you got yourself a clear mind ready to take on the tasks of your busy life. Another thing you can do when stressed is try focusing on one task at a time rather than trying to take on everything at once.
Next time you are really, truly happy, LIVE in the moment. Embrace it. Don't go taking a photo of it. Soak it all in and take a picture in your mind where it will live forever. Remember who you were with, how it felt, and why it made you feel that way. Moments like those are worthwhile and living in the moment and being mindful will better enhance your experiences.
Be mindful.
Live in the now.
Put the phone down and just enjoy life.
It really is that simple.
