It seems so easy to look at things negatively, almost as if it has become a trend for our generation to call themselves "pessimists." Being peppy and happy are almost insults. I think that it is time for a change of attitude.
As a terribly negative person myself, I can completely understand how other negative minded people think. Sometimes it is not even in my control how much of a "downer" I am. However, this does not mean that I do not appreciate positivity or that I want to be so negative all the time.
Some things that help me stay positive and get through hard situations is to think of the outcome of these certain unpleasant situations. If you are really not looking forward to presenting a project or even going to work for a few hours, just think about how accomplished you will feel afterwards. Even if the only positive thing about having to do that specific thing is that it will be over, that is still something else to focus on. Rather than beat yourself up over it, and sit and stew about how much you do not want to do it, just focus on the fact that when you are done, it is done. You do not have to do it anymore.
Another thing that I believe affects a lot of people's positivity is the way they treat certain people and situations. If you are the type of person who is always complaining or hating on someone or a group of people, then the energy that you are going to put out into the world is going to be negative. The energy that you put into the world is the energy that you will get back from it.
Recently I read a book called "You Are A Badass" by Jen Sincero, and it is all about the way you perceive the world and how it perceives you. She talks about how, if you believe that you can do something, then your chances of completing that thing increase. It is basically like tricking your mind and disposition into believing that you have already accomplished a task, which in turn makes the task easier to get done.
This mindset also goes along with the age old saying "Fake It Till You Make It." While I am not condoning lying about your skills with a power tool or how much you actually know how to code, but sometimes a little confidence can help you get a seemingly impossible task done.
So just remember, as my favorite quote from Robert Frost says,
"The only way out is through."
