It's that time of year again. The fall semester is in full swing and the stress of classes is starting to settle in. Whether you are taking 13 credits or 20, school can be difficult. On top of trying to get good grades you probably have a job or the demands of extracurricular activities. Here are some helpful tips to manage the stress of the semester and be successful (or, at least survive)!

1. Get organized.

Whatever this means to you, make sure you stick to it! Whether it be using a planner or calendar, make sure you get organized in a way that works for you. Get your school supplies early and set up a system to quickly grab them before heading out the door in the morning. For some people, separate notebooks and folders work well, others may use three-ring binders to keep all of their things in one place. Whatever keeps you organized, do it.

2. Find new ways to study.

Studying can be boring. It usually requires a lot of motivation and focus. Studying in the same manner and location every day can be draining and monotonous. Find new places to study to stay on track. I like to study at coffee shops.

They have great atmospheres, are typically quieter and provide the coffee and snacks! Study groups or "study buddies" are another great tool to stay motivated. Meet up with a friend who will hold you accountable for getting your work done.

3. Don't spread yourself too thin.

It is great to load up your schedule with classes and different activities on and off campus. But, make sure you don't overdo it. Never having a break is not only draining, but will rob your motivation. In the end, you'll get bad results. Stay involved, but make sure you take some time for yourself to relax, too!

4. Build connections with your peers and professors.

I know you have probably heard this a million times, but make connections. Your professors are there to help you, so utilize them! They are most likely experts in their field and the class content, so don't be afraid to ask questions if you're unsure. Become friends with your classmates. You can pose questions to them and form study groups.

5. Don't forget to take some time to have fun!

Make sure you stay focused this semester, but don't forget to do something fun. Relax to relieve stress and regroup if you are stressed. Sometimes you may feel guilty not doing something school-related every second of the day. But trust me, you burn out if you never take a break to hang out with friends or even just watch TV after a long day.

School can be stressful, but following some of these tips can make for a great semester. Don't forget to work hard, but also have some fun in college!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
