I am from a very small town outside of Nashville named Pleasant View, Tennessee. It's a town where everyone knows everyone, Friday night lights are the only thing that matters and kids drove their tractors to school. I absolutely loved growing up in a small town, but after going to college and experiencing the greatness that is Knoxville, my eyes have been opened a bit. When I come back to Pleasant View now, it can be, in the nicest way possible, painfully boring. We don't have a movie theater, a bowling alley, a mall or even a Walmart. We do have a Sonic. That's about it. So coming up on my last holiday break spent at home, I figured I would give my fellow Small Town, USA residents some tips on surviving the long weeks before you get back to K-Town.
Spend time with your family.
Ok, yes this is obvious, but seriously make plans with your family. You'll be spending time with your family on the couch watching football, but that is going to get real boring, real quick. Go out to a movie or have a game night. Nothing brings the fam closer together than a game of Monopoly. If you've been blessed with super cool parents like me, play a few rounds of Cards Against Humanity if your really wanna make things interesting.
Plan a weekend for your college friends to visit.Show your friends everything there is about your adorable little town. You can even invite them to a party with your high school friends and show them how you get down in a small town. Make it a short weekend trip though because obviously there isn't all that much to do.
Speaking of high school friends, hang out with them. Some may come and go over the years and that's ok, because the important ones will still be your friends no matter how long it's been. It's even more of a good time if you are all finally 21.
Get to all those Pinterest recipes and crafts you've wanted to try.I have boards on boards of pins I have wanted to try out, but of course never have the time during the semester. Well now this is the time! Go to the grocery with your parents so they can get the supplies (score) and get to cooking. You may not have a hob lob close to you, because of the whole small town thing, so make the most out of a trip if you go. Remember, grandparents still love handmade gifts! Try not to go too crazy in your tiny town and enjoy it while you can. As annoying as it can be, it's still home and you're still proud to be from there!
