I always thought I would join Greek life, but I was also very skeptical of it. But now that I've been in a sorority for almost a year, I've realized that I am a totally different person than who I was last year at this time.
1. I am more philanthropic.
Being of service to others has always been very important to me. It's the whole reason that I'm majoring in political science so I can help people and see the changes that they want made turned into a reality. Being in a sorority has made philanthropy one of the most important things in my life. I love knowing that the work that sororities do actually benefit real people with real problems.
2. I am more outgoing.
I always suffered from undiagnosed social anxiety and crippling shyness, but now, I'm an extremely social person. I love meeting new people and talking to them about their lives. I've loved getting to know my own sisters, but also people in other sororities and fraternities. Some of the best people that I've meet in Greek life have been from other sororities and I love them just as much as I love my own sisters because Panhellenic unity should be stressed in every Greek community.
3. I work harder.
I always have sisters there to push me and motivate me. Their support and love is unwavering and so appreciated. I also work harder because I know that the harder I work the better our chapter will be.
4. I learned to be a better friend.
Being a friend to over 100 sisters seems daunting and like a lot to handle, but the friendships I have with them are some of the deepest, most important friendships I have ever had. They always know what to say and they are there for every late night drive to Sonic or Walmart, every breakup, every illness, etc. They are always there for me and vice versa.
5. I am substantially better at arts and crafts.
Painting canvases, coolers, pin boxes, wooden Greek letters, banners, etc. along with making paper mache homecoming displays and making tutus for date parties has given me a lot of receipts from Hobby Lobby and Michaels, but also a lot of new skills that I would have never developed without the srat life.
6. I learned to truly live my promise to live by open and secret mottos.
I wake up every day and I see the Creed of Alpha Delta Pi right next to my bed. Every morning it reminds me that today I am going to live for my sisters. "We live for each other" is much more than something that we just say on our Instagrams on #WLFEOWednesday. To me, this motto means that we live for something more than just ourselves.
I've been a member for nearly a year now so I can't wait to see what other positive changes Greek life has on me and thousands of other students. Being in a sorority and knowing that this is my home made me the happiest that I have been in a long time. And I hope everyone can experience the feeling I get when I'm with my sisters.
