As the fall semester came to a close, and the spring grows slowly nearer many students often come to a fork in the road - employment. For many the thought of getting an internship or full time job seems easy enough, but the reality turns out to be much bleaker.
Some graduating seniors may have full on panic attacks once January 1st passes, and business students the world over start anticipating interviews for investment firms or some other corporation to put on their resume. There are still those however, that choose a different path. If you are happy with your choice - congratulations! You have now given yourself the next four months to frolic happily amongst the happy hours... after you've told your parents.
Preparation to drop this bombshell is absolutely necessary to keep relations with your primary care-givers in order. Results may vary.
1. Give a practice speech in the mirror, or while driving in the car. Rehearse how you are going to give an eloquent spiel on giving up the chance of money or stability for **adventure**.
2. Consider the venue where you will be addressing the subject. A public space might be a good choice if your parent is likely to blow up.
3. Sit your parent(s) down.
4. Bring up "your future" if they haven't already.
5. Forget everything you've practiced saying because they can sense your fear.
6. While they're not paying as much attention quickly mention that you might like to "take some time off".
7. Act shocked (because you are) when they say that sounds like a good idea because you "need a vacation".
8. Excitedly begin discussing your plans, whether that's travel or bumming around.
9. Soon realize that they actually mean a real vacation and not taking time off until the fall.
10. Tell them you're actually not working. At this point in the conversation your parents will likely tell you that you're not allowed to do that and you need to get a job and stop being lazy.
11. Weep a little bit on the inside.
12. Bring up the fact that this is what you're doing because you're an adult.
13. Have the concept of adulthood be shot down.
14. Embrace the disappointment.
