When They Had 5 Seconds To Breathe, I Asked 15 College Students How Their First Week Of School Was Going

In This Article:

Ahh, college. It's grown up boarding school. For some, it's their first time away from home and family. Moving into dorms is a whole day's event and classes just seem to start out of the blue.

In the midst of the hustle and bustle during the first week of college classes, I asked 15 different people about their first week and how it was going.

These are their answers.

1. "Pretty good. My classes just suck and I hate my chemistry teacher."

2. "Good. I just don't like getting up for my 7 am class. It's so far away from my dorm. I don't even have time to eat."

3. "It's going great. I don't have any complaints. I am so excited for this year, though."

4. "It's really fun actually. I like it so far. I saw an old lady with a rolling backpack. One of my professors didn't take roll or introduce himself."

5. "It's going good. My classes are all easy. I've been to the pool twice, so that's nice. I'm chillin'."

6. "It's good. All of my professors are fine, for now. My classes are all interesting."

7. "It isn't as bad, as I thought it was going to be. It's kind of like high school. I met cool people in my classes, too."

8. "It was okay. It's just going to be a hard semester. I already know it."

9. “My professor reminds me of my dad, which is super funny. I am actually  excited to go to my classes. It’s not like high school, where I had to go to classes I didn’t like.”

10. “I love how everyone is so talkative in my classes. It makes my classes more interesting.”

11. “The first week here was really hot. My classes are already stressing me out. My roommates are cool, so I’m having a good time.”

12. “I got my work cut out for me. Tuesdays suck, but it’s going to be a good year.”

13. “I skipped both of my classes today. My professors are nice. But I still feel like I’m going to miss classes again this year.”

14. “I like my classes. They’re really cool  for the most part. I’m just hungry all the time.”

15. “It’s going good. I just think that this is going to be a tough year for me. But I am ready for this year and I’m so excited.”

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
