A gluten free diet seems to be the new rage amongst college kids for its health benefits. It reduces headaches, stomach aches, and promotes weight loss. For some though, like myself, eating gluten free is not a choice but a requirement due to an allergy.
Trying to eat gluten free can be difficult and expensive on a budget. So here are a few tips on how to follow the diet without going broke.
The grocery store has some great gluten free options that are affordable if you eat them in the right proportion. Bread products tend to be a bit more overpriced but pasta and granola bars do not cost more then normal ones.
The best way to save money is to try and find items that are naturally gluten free such as fruit, vegetables, and nuts. You would be surprised with how many foods you already eat that are gluten free. Be careful though, because gluten is in a lot of items that many people don’t realize, such as salad dressings, soups and seasonings. Be sure to double check the ingredients.
If you are willing to spend a little bit more money, venture out to grocery stores such as Whole Foods and Central Market. These locations carry more gluten free options to provide you with a more varied diet. Although sometimes these stores mark up their prices, it may be worth it every once in awhile to get your favorite food.
Another good way to save some money is to do your own baking. While this is a bit more time consuming, you get a lot more bang for your buck. It is really simple to just Google gluten free recipes and you will get more then enough ideas. My suggestion is to try and find multiple recipes that call for the same type of flour substitute because these tend to be the most costly item. You can find anything online from gluten free Girl Scout cookies to gluten free crock-pot meals. It is fun to try out a new recipe and it can be a fun get together with friends to split the cost of the meal and make dinner together.
Now not all of you have the luxury of having your own kitchen, so my suggestion is to get in contact with your school's cafeteria staff and notify them of your allergy. Many schools are becoming more aware of the gluten allergy and are adapting their food options to benefit these students. Some schools even have gluten free meetings for students to provide feedback on what they feel their school needs. If your school cafeteria does not offer these options, opt for a smaller meal plan so you can spend more money at the grocery store to get gluten free meals. A lot of products don’t require a kitchen such as English muffins for sandwiches, blueberry muffins, mac n’ cheese and Chex cereal.
While sometimes being gluten free is a total bummer, the health benefits are amazing. Food companies are aware of this new market and are trying to reach you. Use the Internet to research foods, download apps that tell you about local restaurants, and use cookbooks. You no longer have to sit at a dinner and have to be the one eating only a salad; the gluten free options are now endless.
